MATCH REPORTS 2019
Saturday 25th May Pentyrch 85-69 Rumney Gardens
****** A Curruthers Win ******
In the third of the Curruther's Shield qualifying matches, the Tyrchs recorded their first win over Rumney Gardens from the East side of Cardiff, whom we also beat in the corresponding away fixture last year. All 4 rinks won, so a successful day.
Wednesday 22nd May Pentyrch **-** Mackintosh

Wednesday 15th May Pentyrch 59-64 Taffs Well
****** Close call for Wellmen ******
The first CMWL match since the 1st of May because of bad weather, and we welcomed our local rivals Taffs Well. A close match and plaudits to Pentyrch who came close to upsetting the form book with a team weakened by the lack of availability of some players.
Colin Howson with Denzil Thomas,Russell Howell and Bernie Simpson won convincingly 22-14. Captain Ian Broxton also skipped a winning rink with Bryn Owen,Keith Capron and Peter Neville, winning 19-18. Don Wibley with Brian Pearce, Garron Owen and Dave Ashmore went down 8-11 and John Davies, Peter Mynett, Howard Thomas and John Beacham lost 10-21. A great effort from Pentyrch.

Saturday 11th May Pentyrch 71-82 Caerphilly Town
****** Hard cheese against Caerphilly ******
An improvement on the corresponding fixture from last year and as last year only one winning rink skipped again by Ian Broxton with Bryn Owen, Peter Mynett and Peter Neville. Mark Krawiecki with Colin Howson, Russell Howell and Dave Ashmore were the worst rink, losing 11-23 after a false dawn of a start of 3-0 at the first end. Brian Ilbery with Don Wibley, John Davies and John Beacham went close losing 19-23. Barrie Thomas standing in for Peter Stuart, with Brian Pearce, Howard Thomas and Denzil Thomas went closer still going down 19-21 after looking as if they would be swamped at one stage. A two week Saturday break now with The Open Day next Saturday. Please come and support: we desperately need a bigger and younger squad of players.
Saturday 4th May Pentyrch 52-113 Bargoed
****** History Repeats Itself ******
Almost a year ago to the day, the Tyrchs suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the youthful and raucous team from Bargoed. Good to see a bowls team playing with such enthusiasm. A case of history repeating itself, even improving itself from the Bargoed perspective - this time winning all 4 rinks and extending the total points gap. This was the first of this season's group matches in the WBA Carruther's Shield competition. As last year, the sun was shining although its warmth was tempered by a sharp northerly breeze. Once again, Bargoed were dominant, although they did not seem to be having things all their own way in the first half of the match with Pentyrch. At the 9th end Pentyrch were winning on 3 rinks!
Brian Ilbery with Bryn Owen, Keith Capron and Bernie Simpson were never in it only scoring at 4 ends and losing 7-30 to a very strong Bargoed rink. Iain Russell, Don Wibley, John Davies and Dave Ashmore were quick out of the blocks, leading 7-2 after 6 ends and 15-13 at the 13th which proved to be unlucky? Thereafter, the opponents moved up several gears stamping their authority on proceedings with 5 at the last end to win 33-16. Ian Broxton with Peter Stuart, Howard Thomas and John Beacham were leading brilliantly 10-1 at the 8th end then wilted only scoring 3 more points in the entire match against opposition who surged away to win 30-13. Mark Krawiecki, Colin Howson, Russell Howell and Keith Davies were the most "successful" Pentyrch rink, losing 16-20. This was a hard fought match with the lead changing several times throughout and both teams had moments when they cursed their luck and several incidents of flukes and fine margins missed could have changed the result. At the 17th end Pentyrch were 16-11 up and hoping to win but a 2,4,1 and 2 meant Bargoed won 20-16. Even at the last end, millimetres meant that 2 shots that would have given the Trychs a draw, went amiss. Special mention to Keith Davies who started his season late, in the uncustomary position as lead and played outstandingly, almost throughout (apart from the last 2 ends for which he is forgiven) with at least 9 touchers using more chalk than someone needing to raise pH levels in their soil! ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalk#Uses )
Despite the defeat, the match was played in good spirit and good humour. Captain Ian Broxton wished Bargoed well in the rest of the competition and kindly pointed out to them that Welshpool, who eliminated Bargoed from the later knock-out stages last year, is his native town.
Final note: it was a glorious day of sport with the magnificent sight at Parc-y-Dwrlyn of rugby, football, cricket, and of course bowls all being simultaneously played. How lucky the residents of Pentyrch are to have such wonderful sporting facilities.

Wednesday 1st May Cardiff (Sophia Gdns) 85-58 Pentyrch
****** Back down to earth at the Gardens ******
After the encouraging start in the CMWL two weeks ago, a defeat at a pleasantly sunny Sophia Gardens. Three rinks down and one victorious.
Saturday 20th April Pentyrch 55-88 Taffs Well
****** Wellmen take the lead in Garth Cup ******
A glorious day's weather for the first competitive bowls on a Saturday this season. The Tyrchs, buoyant after an away win at St Fagans earlier in the week welcomed Taffs Well for the first leg of the traditional annual tussle for the Garth Cup. Taffs Well showed their overall dominance with a convincing 88-55 win. Congratulations to them on their win and thanks for a great afternoon's bowls in good company.
Wednesday 17th April St Fagans 57-70 Pentyrch
****** Encouraging signs,a win & blasts from the past ******
Some decent weather heralded the start of the the outdoor competitive season for Pentyrch and an equally decent start for Pentyrch in playing terms with a rare victory at local rivals St Fagans. The match also saw the Pentyrch debuts of Peter Stuart and Viv Grandfield and the returns of Bryn and Garron Owen - all very welcome at a time of losing other players when it is very difficult to keep fielding a competitive team. Former club stalwarts, Tim Morgan, Barrie Ledbury and Pat Owen came to support and Mike Morgan also formerly of Pentyrch, skipped for the opposition against Mark Krawiecki - so a pleasantly nostalgic evening as well.
Brian Ilbery, skipping with Don Wibley (who has been playing with Pentyrch for its whole history), Peter Mynett and John Beacham won 20-10, were drawing 5-5 at the 7th end and then never looked back. Peter Stuart, John Davies, Brian Pearce and John Eagle went behind 5-3 at the 5th end and then never gained parity after that, eventually losing 14-20. Mark Krawiecki with Colin Howson, Garron Owen and Bernie Simpson were down 2-9 at the 6th end after some ambitious shots by the Pentyrch skip went awry then rallied to win 10 of the next 12 ends to win 18-12. CaptainIan Broxton with Bryn Owen, Keith Capron and Viv Garthfield were in total command, 16-3 at the 11th end against a rink skipped by Neil Collett and almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with the opposition getting back to 15-17 at the penultimate end. a single shot at the last end saw them home with and 18-15 win.
Thanks to our hosts for providing a great playing surface, warm pasties and a warm welcome. As the sun went down, all seemed right with the world and indeed that was emphasised later in the evening when Spurs knocked Manchester City out of the Champions' League!
