FINALS WEEKEND SATURDAY 9th & SUNDAY 10th SEPTEMBER 2017
A turbulent weekend of weather disrupted Finals Weekend causing some revisions to the original plans and the first use of protective nets on the green for a number of seasons. The green was looking in great condition, thanks to Bill Malcolm who had been working on it almost until the start of play.
Saturday: Brian Ilbery organised a great and successful Novices' Trophy tournament that started at 11 and finished late on Saturday afternoon after a considerable delay for an almost biblical deluge and changing the rinks to allow play to go on. The winners of the two initial groups - John Beacham and John Davies contested the final which was won by John Davies in his first season at the club. Congratulations to him and everyone who took part in a well-contested and well-humoured competition. The Men's Pairs Final also took place on Saturday afternoon between Barrie Thomas & Russell Howell and Howard Thomas & Brian Pearce. Some great bowling took place as the blue skies and bright sun returned to the green. The game was suspended at 13-13 after 15 ends with the remainder of the match to be played on Sunday morning.
Sunday: The day dawned grey and a brooding sky sent clouds scudding in from the west. More rain had fallen overnight but the contestants of the Men's Pairs were ready at 10.30 to finish off yesterday's unfinished business. The eventual winners were Russell Howell and Barrie Thomas. Congratulations to them. After a short rest for Russell, the Men's Triples Final got under way. John Eagle, Russell Howell and Iain Russell played against John Beacham, Howard Thomas and Ian Broxton. A shortened format was agreed on because of the horrendous weather and John, Russell and Iain ran out as champions for 2017. Well done to them. The final match of the day was Ian Broxton v Mark Krawiecki in the Men's Singles. The conditions proved to be very difficult with occasional bursts of strong rain, a strong wind and woods that were very difficult to clean and grip. Ian Broxton tried very hard having already spent some time on the green in the earlier Men's Triples Final. Mark Krawiecki ran out as Champion for 2017.
The small band of brave players and spectators gathered in the Pavilion at the end of the day for the final presentations and the draw of the Season Long Raffle that has raised a considerable amount of money towards paying for the verandah, which has proved so useful and comforting in giving shelter from the sun and in particular, this weekend from the rain. Howard Thomas won the first prize in the raffle with second and third prizes going to two members of Cardiff Rotary Club who had had an afternoon of bowls at the club earlier in the season. As Brian Ilbery said before the raffle, it's incredible to think that this time last year we were making the Finals Day presentations in the dilapidated old cabin that would be demolished the following week. We have come a long way in one year.
As ever, thanks have to go to various people whose hard work and selflessness allows such events to take place: the players (too few, sadly), the organisers, caterers and spectators. You know who you are.
The Mixed Triples Final will take place later this week. Weather permitting...
