****** Cancelled! - December Coffee Morning ******
Unfortunately, due to the rising number of Covid cases in Wales and the proximity of the event to Christmas, the Committee has decided to cancel the December Coffee Morning that was due to take place on Friday 17th December. Our first concern and priority is the safety of our members and those who are close to them.
****** Cheese and Wine Success! ******
A very successful Christmas edition of the Cheese and Wine event was held at the rugby club on Sunday 3rd December. As usual it was a happy social event, traditionally held as a warm-up to Christmas and had the added bonus of raising vital funds for the club.
Thanks to everyone who helped - selling raffle tickets, providing raffle prizes, donations of food, helping to set up but special thanks to Liz Cugley and the Ladies' section for organising the event and providing a wonderful buffet.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!

****** December Coffee Morning ******
Hot on the heels of November's Coffee Morning comes the first ever December Coffee Morning and the last of 2021. Please come along and celebrate Christmas early and support the club at the same time. 10:30am at the Pavilion on Friday 17th of December.
****** November Coffee Morning ******
November's Coffee Morning took place on Friday November 26th at 10:30 am in the Bowls Pavilion. Great thanks to the close to 40 friends and members who enjoyed great company and refreshments. Thanks to the Social Committee for organising and for all the generous donations of cakes and biscuits. These events, as well as providing a wonderful opportunity for us to meet during the close season are crucial in raising funds for the club. Yesterday's morning raised £220 - a great effort. Our last Coffee Morning (and first ever in December) will be a festive edition on Friday 17th December at 10:30 am in the Bowls Pavilion.
****** October Coffee Morning ******
October's Coffee Morning, held on Friday 29th, raised £134 for club funds. Many thanks for those who were able to come and thanks to all the helpers and for the donations of cakes. The next Coffee Morning will take place on Friday 26th November at 10:30 am in the Bowls Pavilion.
****** 30th Anniversary Dinner ******
On the evening of Friday 22nd October, the club held a special dinner at Radyr Golf Club, to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. The guest of honour was Bill Malcolm, retiring green keeper who has given many years of loyal service, allowing hundreds of players to enjoy the wonderful game of bowls on beautiful Pentyrch grass. Chair, Ian Broxton presented Bill with a special gift. We all wish Bill a long, healthy and happy retirement. Thanks to Margaret and Cyril Ellmes for having organised a very pleasant evening.
****** Thomas Carroll sponsorship ******
The club is grateful to Thomas Carroll for their generous and continued support for this last year. They have been a loyal and long term sponsor of the bowls club helping to provide club shirts and trophies. We look forward to continuing our partnership. www.thomascarroll.co.uk/

****** Double Celebrations at Pentyrch ******
Bowls International magazine has published an article about the club's recent recruitment success. Back in August Brian Ilbery was interviewed and explained what had been done to encourage people to take up the sport and help the club to carry on in its 30th Anniversary season. Well done to everyone involved and thanks to Bowls International for publishing the article.
****** Green Winter Maintenance ******
Avonmore Associates www.avonmore-associates.co.uk/sports-surfaces/bowling-green were at the club on Monday 4th October to carry out major end of season maintenance. This is something that Bill Malcolm and volunteers have carried out in recent years. The specialist knowledge, equipment, resources and manpower provided by Avonmore will provide a much more efficient, reliable and long term solution to improving the playing surface. Thanks to Bill & Ian Broxton for the photographs. MK
****** One man went to mow... ******
With the impending retirement of our long serving greenkeeper, Bill Malcolm, the club has decided to train up a number of volunteers in safe use of mowers and other maintenance equipment. Bill has very kindly offered to train members and offer advice. The plan for future maintenance of the green is that the main winter preparation will be carried out by Avonmore and that other season and additional work will be carried out by club members. We are, of course, very grateful to Bill and the volunteers, two of whom are pictured practising below. The wonderful late September weather has helped too.
****** Successful Spoons ******
Monday 13th September: The penultimate "Spoons" or social Monday bowls evening saw a return to high numbers taking part. Easily 35 or more players from around aged 8 to 80 plus - enjoying a great sport in a fun and sociable spirit. This augurs very positively for next season with many new members joining us and seeing how this sport is so inclusive. Despite the autumn chill and early dusk there is definitely a positive feeling at the club.
****** Second New Members' Competition ******
A second new members' Singles competition was played at the green on Friday 10th September. More on the 30th Anniversary page. Here.
****** Playing the game of Bowls ******
There is a new page on the website that has information about playing the game of bowls. To begin, there are two articles that are useful for players new to the game and as a good reminder to more experienced players. Worth a read: go to the page here.
****** Coffee Mornings are back! ******
Wonderful news that after over a year and a half without Coffee Mornings, we are pleased to announce that they are back, as previously, on the last Friday of every month. On Friday 24th September at 10:30 - 12:00 at the pavilion. A great chance to socialise, meet friends, relax and enjoy some delicious refreshments and weather permitting take in the view of the gardens and the fresh air - all for the bargain price of only £3. Amazing raffle prizes too! The mornings are open to all, including non-members and since their start have become a vital source of income for the club. Please come along and support.

****** New Equipment Container ******
On the morning of Thursday 2nd September, the club took delivery of a new maintenance equipment container. See more on this page.
****** 30th Anniversary Page ******
Don't forget to look at our 30th Anniversary page with articles and features about the history of our club and what it means to members - past, present and future. The latest fascinating article is by original member, Iain Russell. You can get to the page here.
****** Autumn Community Link ******
The "All Change at Pentyrch Bowling Club" Community Link, exclusively previewed here recently has now been published. It is available online on page 13 and as an image form here on the left. Thanks to Brian for writing and to the Community Link for publishing.

****** Green keepers ******
Wednesday 18th August: On a quick visit to the club today, I met Bill Malcolm, (pictured on the left) our green keeper for many years and Jim Martin who has been consistently helping Bill for the last couple of years. This just to remind them of all our appreciation into the hard work they put into maintaining a great playing surface, a surface which has really improved this year in looks and performance. Diolch yn fawr. Thank you.
****** Updated Safeguarding Policy ******
At August's Management Committee Meeting, the latest update of club's Safeguarding Policy was approved. There is a link to a copy of it on the POLICIES page under the "more..." tab at the top of each webpage. Jan Berry is the club's Safeguarding Officer.
****** All Change at Pentyrch Bowling Club ******
"All Change at Pentyrch Bowling Club" is the title of our article that has been submitted to the Pentyrch Community Council Link magazine for the Autumn Edition. The article talks about recent recruitment successes for the club, the ongoing need to encourage new players and members including tasters sessions and the social opportunities that the club offers all local members and residents throughout the year when Covid restrictions are lifted.
Thanks to Club Secretary, Brian Ilbery for writing it. As always, these items take time and are done on a voluntary basis for the benefit of the club and all its members. Click on this link to read it here first... Link Article.

****** Keeping Cool ******
Club Chairman and Captain, Ian Broxton, recently discovered that our long-serving fridge freezer had broken down and was beyond repair. We sent out an urgent request for help to find a replacement. Thankfully, within 24 hours, our appeal was answered by the fantastic generosity of the children of former members Howard and Myra Thomas, who are always fondly remembered and thought of at our club. Betsan, Richard and Andrew donated £300, with which Ian purchased a brand new appliance. Ian and Jim Martin have now installed it in the kitchen and we look forward to putting it to good use as summer really starts and pandemic restrictions relax (hopefully).

****** Recent Recruitment ******
We have had a good response, so far this season in recruiting new members and more importantly new players for the Men's and Ladies' sections. They have joined us through word of mouth, local leaflets and posters and through our social media outlets. We urge all members to take every opportunity to look for new players. For the men, it has been particularly important in providing enough players to fulfill competitive fixtures. We thank our recent recruits who have taken the plunge and played in matches from the word go. We will support you and encourage you to persevere in a great game - even the more experienced of us continue to learn, get frustrated but revel in our minor personal and team triumphs! Four of our new players helped us to a win over Llantrisant in a PG1 home win on Saturday 3rd July.
****** Advertising Banners *******
Monday 24th May 2020: Thanks to Iain Russell for organising the production and placement of three banners around the Parc y Dwrlyn grounds and the village to advertise our presence in the area and to hopefully encourage more people to try bowls and join us. Finally, we had some decent weather for club night this evening with the positive prospect of three new members for the Men's section. |
****** Sponsorship Carpet Services (Cardiff) ******
Saturday May 22nd 2021
Long term club sponsors Carpet Services (Cardiff) Ltd (C.S. Flooring Solutions) have recently agreed to donate £250 as a generous contribution to our utility costs. This comes after their continued sponsorship last year when there was no play or any club activity due to the Covid pandemic. As ever, we are grateful to the generosity and positive relationship we have with the company which began with club member Peter Mynett and his late wife Jill and now through his children, Anthony and Sue. You can read more about how Peter started the business here.

****** Remembering Jillian Mynett ******
Monday 12th April 2021
Long time player and member of the bowls club, Peter Mynett has donated a beautiful bench in memory of his beloved wife, Jillian who was also a keen bowls player and wonderful member of the club. Peter and his family have very generously supported the club with donations and sponsorship over the years through their family business, Carpet Services (Cardiff) Limited, for which the club is always grateful.
Today, Peter and his son Anthony (who has carried on running the family business with his sister, Sue) proudly presented the bench to the club. The bench is located in pride of place on the veranda of the pavilion. Now many members and visitors will be able to rest and enjoy the comfort of the bench looking over the green and to think of Jillian too.

****** Community Link Spring 2021 ******
A short article featuring the club appears in the Spring edition of the Community Link magazine. On page 35, Brain Ilbery and Ian Broxton have written about the urgent need for new players. This is a priority for us every season and who knows how much more urgency there may be when we begin playing again after the Covid pandemic. To that end, it requires every member to look for new players, be that amongst family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues etc. The Recruitment working party will make extra efforts in the coming weeks but it needs everyone to be helping in whatever way they can. Our article appears on page 35. You can read the article by clicking here: www.pentyrch.cc/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Community-Link-111-Spring-2021.pdf
