Final League Table East Wales Private Greens Bowling Association Div. 4 2023
Saturday 16th September Sully Sports 62 - 85 Pentyrch
So, we came to the final match of the season with a fight at Sully Sports to see who would come bottom of the table. What a contrast in the weather from seven days before with strong westerlies, grey scudding clouds and constant drizzle. It was good to sign off with a strong win and 12 points to condemn the hosts to bottom place.
Genuine thanks to everyone who played today and this season during many difficult times. Thank you to hosts Sully for the match played in good spirit and one positive aspect of us both being relegated together (if that comes to pass) is that we can still look forward to the best post match meal of the season. Rink scores in the pictures below.

Saturday 2nd September Llantwit Major 101 - 50 Pentyrch
The penultimate match of the season took place at Llantwit Major on a beautiful late summer's day. This was the first time for the visitors to play here and raised expectations of playing at a wonderful club were certainly exceeded. For the first time for several weeks, the Tyrchs were able to field a full sixteen on a Saturday - an achievement made possible by the late and gratefully accepted availability of Garron Owen who has not represented the club for some time.
It proved to be a tough day on the green for the visitors with only one rink managing a draw.
Rink scores:
Iain Russell, Andrew Herbert, Garron Owen and Adrian Bevan who had an early significant lead of 9-1 then let the home team to dominate to go ahead 15-11 and then rallied with a 4 and 3 to go 18-17 up into the final end, then conceding one shot to draw 18-18.
Mark Krawiecki, Dave Bamforth, Denzil Thomas and John Beacham had an exciting afternoon, starting optimistically with a 5 at the first end then with the lead changing hands several times until at 18-18 at the 18th end. Unfortunately then losing discipline, conceding five in the last three ends to finish 18-23 down.
Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Stephen Evans and Martin Hopkins had a difficult time against a strong home rink, losing 7-30.
Barrie Thomas, Bryn Owen, Peter O'Reilly and Mike Britton also had a tough afternoon also finishing 7-30 down.
It should be noted that of the sixteen Pentyrch players, eight are either in their second or only first season playing in competitive matches.
It was a genuine pleasure to be playing at a club with such wonderful facilities on and off the green. It is apparent that a lot of time and effort from many has helped to create and maintain their success. The hospitality and welcome of the players and volunteers was genuinely warm and generous and Pentyrch are grateful for that. It is very likely that we will not be back in league matches next season but their captain, Graham Jones has kindly invited us to return in friendly fixtures next season. For me, the afternoon summarised why I love this sport - the competition, the opportunity to improve and challenge yourself, sharing the enjoyment of the company of our own team and of the opposition and the chance to travel to different locations. It's also a sport that is so inclusive. In what other sports can you have a thirteen year old and a ninety year old and many in between on the same arena competing together, as we did today? Spread the word to the unknowing...

Saturday 26th August Mackintosh 93 - 61 Pentyrch
Today's Private Greens match took the Tyrchs to our very good friends at the Mackintosh for another Division 4 fixture. It's always a pleasure to play here with our tradition of good relationships and always a nostalgic visit for captain Mark Krawiecki who began his bowls 'career' at the Mack some thirty years ago. It is a unique setting, tucked away amongst rows of terraced houses is the splendid castellated building constructed by wealthy Scottish benefactor Lord Mackintosh of Mackintosh for the local residents. Fascinating history of the Mackintosh Institute here.
The visitors, once again turned up undermanned and played with two rinks as triples. A highlight of the day, however was that John Beacham made a welcome return to the team for the first time since the 24th May after injury.
Rink Scores:
Mark Krawiecki, Denzil Thomas and Keith Davies generally struggled and lost 23-12, 23-9 after a 25% deduction for playing with only three players.
Performance of the day was by Iain Russell, Alan Lowndes and Adrian Bevan played brilliantly as a triple winning 34-12, 25-12 after the 25% deduction. Even after the deduction, it shows what can be done with a consistent and determined approach.
Barrie Thomas, Bryn Owen, Chris Locke and John Beacham started encouragingly but after the 5th end were overwhelmed, especially in the last five ends: 35-11 eventually by an efficient Mackintosh rink led by a strong skip, Stephen Hole.
Brian Ilbery, Colin Howson, Gordon Tucker and Martin Hopkins also found the going tough losing 23-16.
Two matches to go: thanks to everyone who played today for keeping keeping on - Llantwit Major away next Saturday. It would be great to go there for the first time as a club with a full sixteen. We have had several favourable reports from opposition teams who have played there already this season about the green and facilities there - something to look forward to.

Wednesday 23rd August Taffs Well 72 - 62 Pentyrch
The Garth Cup Part 2. Two weeks on from gaining a slender one shot lead, the Tyrchs took the short downhill journey to the foot of Garth Mountain (seen in the background of the first image below) to try to consolidate the lead and take the trophy from Taffs Well back up the hill to Pentyrch. In the end, on a humid evening the home side prevailed by 10 shots and by only 9 over the two legs.
Congratulations to captain Walter and the Wellmen who were just slightly more resilient than the visitors in retaining the trophy for the next year. Thanks to captain Walter and his team on their win and for their friendship and hospitality on and off the green. We look forward to next season and another go at taking the Garth Cup 'home'.

Saturday 19th August Pentyrch 58 - 86 Cardiff Athletic
The last home PG match of the season and very likely the last home match in Division 4, with Pentyrch second from bottom in the table and the gap between us and safety probably too wide to avoid relegation with three away matches remaining. The visitors by contrast, in second place and threatening to finish as promoted champions. Unfortunately, the home side entered the fray minus two players, so the rinks playing as triples were deducted 25% of their final scores. Nevertheless, the assembled team played with defiance and determination giving a good account of themselves. Once again, many played out of their comfort zones which will have given them valuable experience for the future. Six of today's team are in their first season of playing competitively!
Rink scores:
Well done to Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Ian Davies (first Saturday match) and Dave Ashmore - the only winning rink : 19-15.
Keith Davies, Jordan Napper, Peter O'Reilly and Mike Britton who came close to winning but faded in the last three ends losing 18-22.
Mark Krawiecki, Denzil Thomas and Dan Price fought hard, losing 18-22 before the 25% deduction: 13-22 for the match score.0-7 after two ends was not a good start although they rallied and held the lead in the middle of the match.
Barrie Thomas, Bryn Owen and Chris Locke were also 7-0 after two ends, clawing back to 7-7 before getting left behind to finish 11-27 before the 25% to 8-27.
Mark K would like to thank Jordan for arriving early to set up the rinks, Brian Ilbery for manning the bar, those who helped with the washing up and tidying up. Trish and her rugby club caterers for the buffet. Most of all, thank you to the players for turning up and enjoying a very pleasant and competitive game of bowls together. We have much to look forward to.
Footnote: Once again, there were unprompted, positive comments about about the improved condition of the green from opposition players who are used to playing on probably one of the best greens in Cardiff.

Saturday 12th August Llanbradach A 95 - 30 Pentyrch
The recent run of wins, sadly and rather inevitably came to and end on a largely grey and showery August afternoon. Even with a full strength team, the Tyrchs would have struggled to get a decent result at 'The Brad' whose bowling prowess and tradition is well known in Welsh bowls. With a team of only twelve (4 x triples), the visitors did themselves and the club proud in playing the fixture and getting the job done. Captain Mark Krawiecki is truly impressed and grateful for the commitment of the eleven, three of whom are only in their first season playing for Pentyrch, who joined him on the short journey to the former mining village and community of Llanbradach.
Rink scores (after 25% subtraction for being a player short):
Mark Krawiecki, Denzil Thomas and Peter O'Reilly 6-17
Gordon Tucker, Brian Ilbery and Mike Britton 6-31
Colin Howson, Chris Locke and Martin Hopkins 11-26
Barrie Thomas, Bryn Owen and Dave Ashmore 7-21
The visitors thank Llanbradach for playing the match in good spirit and winning with good grace. Thanks also for the hospitality and the generous post-match buffet. With relegation looming, it will be a loss not to visit next year. There is no fixture this coming Wednesday, so next Saturday will be the final home match of the season against Cardiff Athletic, currently second and chasing promotion.

Wednesday 9th August Pentyrch 58 - 57 Taffs Well
'All's Well That Ends Well'. - William Shakespeare
A very significant result - The second time this season we have beaten traditional foes and friends from down the hill by one shot and the first time this season with three wins in a row. Remarkable, given the significantly reduced current playing pool. The win was not in fact, confirmed until the day after. On the evening, the win was confirmed as Taffs Well's although some had suspected it was Pentyrch's. On one of the score cards, the final Pentyrch score was incorrectly read by the both captains as 13 but was actually 15. The following morning, Mark Krawiecki noticed and queried the result with the Taffs Well Captain and Secretary confirming the Pentyrch win.
This was the first leg of the locally 'famous' Garth Cup trophy, the Holy Grail of bowls in this small but signifcant part of Wales. The visitors came seeking revenge for their historic one shot home defeat in the CMWL back in May. This match had been postponed two weeks earlier when the rain had fallen all day. The contrast in weather couldn't have been more different with a warm, almost autumnal sun. About three quarters through the match, it looked as if the Tyrchs would win by some 10 shots overall but the resilience of the Wellmen took them to a sliver of a one shot aggregate deficit into the second leg of the cup.
Rink scores:
Mark Krawiecki, Andrew Herbert, Jordan Napper and Mike Britton won 15-13 in a close fought match until the 13th end, when Taffs Well scored 3 followed by a 3 and 1 then going 13-9 ahead into the last end. A spectacular 6 by the home rink at the 18th gave them a 15-13 victory.
Bryn Owen, Alan Lowndes, Denzil Thomas and Ed Brookman, apart from losing the first end were ahead after the 3rd end all the way to the end with Denzil Thomas drawing the last 2 shots at the 18th End to win 15-11. (not 13-11)
Barrie Thomas, Dan Price, Chris Locke and Martin Hopkins had a close battle and conceded 7 shots between the 13th and 16 ends which gave the visitors too much of a gap to close, despite winning the last two ends, lost 10-13.
Brian Ilbery, Dave Bamforth, Gavin Davidson and Paul Cooper played a game of two halves, being 14-5 up at the 10th end, then conceding 15 shots to 4 to lose 18-20.
In summary, a great win with everyone rallying to field a full team and then to play with pride and resilience. More of which will be required at Llanbradach this coming Saturday! And for the second leg at Taffs Well in two week's time.

Saturday 5th August Pentyrch 73 - 61 Sully Sports
****** Long Time Comin' ******
'It's been a long time comin'...and I ain't gonna **** it up this time.' fitting lyrics from Bruce Springsteen - and the home team didn't mess it up this time. History was made - that on Saturday 5th August, Pentyrch won their first Private Greens match of the season against Sully Sports, who are going through similar troubled times in terms of fielding full teams. As it turned out on this day, the visitors had sixteen players against the home team who played one player short. Once again, the miserable weather continued to threaten the fixture going ahead but the wise and Met Office Rain Radar-informed decision to play, proved correct and the day ended in heart and bone warming sunshine to bask in, both real and certainly symbolic.
Rink scores:
Barrie Thomas, Alan Lowndes, Dan Price and Mike Britton were the biggest winners, 21-9 with skip Barrie Thomas getting carried away at the end announcing that they had won 31-9!
Mark Krawiecki, Andrew Herbert, Denzil Thomas and Paul Cooper won reasonably comfortably 23-15 but had a scare between the 15th and 19th ends conceding 9 shots when the visitors realised that a long jack would cause the Tyrchs problems.
Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Peter O'Reilly and Stephen Evans also had a bump in the road, conceding a 4 and 2 at the 16th and 17th ends but then got back on track to finish 21-15 winners.
Iain Russell, Gavin Davidson and Dave Ashmore were the triple and had a difficult afternoon losing 11-22 which was reduced to 8-22 losing 25% for playing a man down. They contributed well to the overall team result.
This win was pleasing in many ways - there was a wonderful feeling of team spirit and pleasure in each others' company that continued from Wednesday's win. It has been and continues to be difficult to put a team together due to various issues that , normally might have been spread over two or three seasons, have conspired to come all at once - personal issues, injuries, illnesses etc. Many of us have had to play out of our 'comfort' zones in positions we may not be ready for and our recently joined players have stepped in too, with limited match experience - as stand-in captain, I am very grateful for all the help, resilience and support you are showing. I hope that the newer players are enjoying the challenge of supporting the team and, by extension the club. I hope that the positive feeling of winning the last two matches has shown the pleasure of playing personally and as a group. As this is written, our immediate challenge is to field at least twelve players for next Saturday's fixture at Llanbradach 'A'.
Thanks to Gavin Davidson for running the bar and ensuring there was enough drink, thanks to Iain Russell for helping to set up the rinks before the match, thanks to those who tidied up and washed the dishes and to Trish and her team from the rugby club for the splendid buffet. Thanks also to Sully Sports - fellow battlers whom we meet away in the final fixture of the season.
In summary, a very positive afternoon with the cherry on top being another compliment from an opposition captain on the condition of the green and playing surface - it is being noticed amongst club members and the wider bowling community.

Wednesday 2nd August Pentyrch 63 - 58 Roath Park
****** 'I Can See Clearly Now The Rain Has Gone ******
The heavy rain of the wettest July continued until mid afternoon of the day of this match, when it was decided the match should go ahead. In the event, it turned out to be the right, decision with the weather improving with glorious late sunshine heralding a Pentyrch win. As recently, there were difficulties in assembling a full sixteen to play and again, all those representing the club acquitted themselves with pride, effort, resilience and even a sense of fun. A special mention to Ian Davies, making his debut, who along with a number of other new players this season and last have made a huge difference on and off the green. Thanks too, to the longer established players for hanging in there and providing wisdom and guidance for the newer players. So, the Trychs won with two winning rinks, one drawn and one lost.
Rink scores:
Iain Russell, Dave Bamforth, Denzil Thomas and Martin Hopkins won 20-9, scoring 10 shots in the last 5 ends.
Mark Krawiecki, Andrew Herbert, Ian Davies and Jordan Napper won 20-12 with a hiccup of dropping a 5 on the way.
Barrie Thomas, Bryn Owen, Dan Price and Chris Locke did things the hard way, fighting back from 4-13 to draw 16-16.
Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Gavin Davidson and Ed Brookman went down 7-21.
Thanks to Gavin Davidson for his fridge space, manning the bar and cooking the pasties. A very pleasing footnote to the evening was, when after the captains had finished their speeches, a Roath Park player, completely unprompted, stood up to speak very positively about the good condition of the green and how much he had enjoyed playing on it, despite all the recent rain. He praised whomever and however the green is being cared for. Well done to everyone involved in it's care this season.
We now look forward to welcoming Sully Sports this coming Saturday - still looking for our first Private Greens win...

Saturday 29th July Penylan 'A' 116 - 47 Pentyrch
****** 'What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.' ******
After two recent postponements due to rain, it was good to be out playing matches again, although starting again away to Penylan was not really the ideal place to go. Hard lessons learnt and experienced by the strongest team in the division by some way. Huge thanks for everyone who was available and played, especially to those with limited experience and a new or relatively new to the game. Thanks also to Iain Russell for standing in as captain of the day.
Rink scores:
Iain Russell, Dave Bamforth, Denzil Thomas, Gavin Davidson 14-22

Wednesday 19th July Fairoak 66 - 48 Pentyrch
****** Pentyrch hit a Wall! ******
A pleasant evening and warm dappled sunshine, playing through the magnificent trees surrounding the green greeted the visitors to Fairoak for this CMWL away fixture. Whereas in May, Pentyrch won at home with three rinks, this time all four Fairoak rinks won, three of which were skipped by the 'Wall' brothers - and another Wall played 3 vs. Mark Krawiecki's rink!
Rink scores:
Brian Ilbery, Darren Lewis, Gordon Tucker and Ed Brookman with the lowest deficit lost 11-14
Iain Russell, Barrie Thomas, Denzil Thomas and Matrin Hopkins lost 11-17
Mark Krawiecki, Alan Lowndes, Dave Bamforth and Gavin Davidson went down 13-17
Colin Howson, Andrew Herbert, Dan Price and Adrian Bevan lost 13-18

Saturday 16th July Pentyrch 44 - 66 Mackintosh
A day of wild and windy weather, with at times, tsunami-like deluges, provoking much speculation that the match would have to be postponed. It was good to receive some positive comments about the playing surface from the opposition, despite the heavy and sustained rain of the previous day. In the end, the match went ahead without interruption, bookended by showers of Biblical proportion, appropriately for the land that some consider to be God's country.

Sadly, another PG1 match passed by without a win but in the context of the lead up to the match there was great support and team spirit that was a genuine highlight. At 11 o'clock in the morning there were still only 14 players in the line-up for various reasons. Massive thanks to Stephen Evans and Ken Lynham for stepping up to play to help field a full team. Thanks as well, to EVERYONE for their efforts and for playing out of position, in some cases, and for understanding the late changes to the rinks. The visitors were definitely reluctant to play and would have been happier to stay in cosy sheltered Cardiff but became stronger and more consistent as the match progressed - a stereotypical game of two halves. Wednesday 12th July Pentyrch 64 - 49 Mackintosh
A good team effort to win our first match in July. It's always a pleasure to welcome our good friends and rivals The Mack to Pentyrch. The weather was breezy but dry after recent heavy rain showers - the green looks good showing recovery from the recent dry spell and ran well. The continued and sustained effort by everyone involved in its upkeep are all positive. On the green, both teams won two rinks each with the superior shots difference giving the win to the home team. Thank you to Ed Brookman who came as reserve.

Rink scores:
Ian Broxton, Colin Howson, Andrew Herbert and Adrian Bevan won 18-7.
Mark Krawiecki, Alan Lowndes, Denzil Thomas and Gavin Davidson won 20-9.
Brian Ilbery, Darren Lewis, Dave Bamforth and Gordon Tucker lost 11-16.
Iain Russell, Barrie Thomas, Chris Locke and Martin Hopkins lost 17-15 having made up a considerable deficit to get to 15-15 at the 15th end and dropping two shots at the 16th and final end. A bit of revenge for Kevin Evans the Mackintosh skip who had to accept a draw with the final shot to Iain in the corresponding away fixture earlier in the season. Well done too, to Bernadette Sheppard (Margaret K's sister) who played lead for the Mack on that rink.
We meet again at home in three days' time in a PG1 fixture - weather permitting!

Saturday 8th July Pentyrch 68 - 89 Penylan A
Another Saturday PG1 defeat, but considering that Pentyrch were playing the league leaders and only just fielded a full team of sixteen, it could be considered a reasonable result and good experience of trying to compete at a higher level. Having said that, the two points gained are not nearly enough. Penylan, at first were slightly troubled by the slower pace of the green than they are accustomed to but superior experience and skill told in the end.
Rink scores:
Iain Russell, Barrie Thomas, Denzil Thomas and Mike Britton won 19-18. With Iain Russell drawing the winning shot at the final end. Well done all and thanks to Mike who became available on the eve of the match.
Ian Broxton, Colin Howson, Chris Locke and Adrian Bevan lost 16-21
Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Gavin Davidson and Dave Ashmore went down 16-24
Mark Krawiecki, Bryn Owen, Andrew Herbert and Martin Hopkins lost 17-26.
Thanks to everyone for a good team effort and showing some resilience.

Wednesday 5th July Whitchurch 72 - 53 Pentyrch
A visit to Whitchurch in the CMWL and the home team completed the double over the visitors - a reverse of the results last year. A humid evening with a green that began to 'sweat' with the result that mats were brought out to avoid damage to the soft surface. This was the first time that many newer players had experienced using these mats and brought back bad memories of those who hadn't played on them for a considerable time. Anyway, sadly a defeat with one winning rink and three going down.
Mark Krawiecki, Keith Davies, Denzil Thomas and Gavin Davidson won 23-12 - their score included a super 7.
Iain Russell, Barrie Thomas, Jordan Napper and Ed Brookman lost 9-14.
Brian Ilbery, Darren Lewis, Gordon Tucker and Martin Hopkins lost 11-18.
Ian Broxton, Colin Howson, Andrew Herbert and Adrian Bevan lost 10-28.
A tough encounter next Saturday in a home PG1 match vs. Penylan A is the next challenge.

Saturday 1st July St Joseph's 93 - 66 Pentyrch
Still no PG win on a Saturday but looking for the positives. a significant improvement on the meeting with St Joseph's at home when the opponents had scored 100 points with three rinks won and one drawn. Today, the Tyrchs kept their total down to less than a century and had a winning rink, thanks to Brian Ilbery and co. At one point, it looked as if Pentyrch may have turned up undermanned for such an important game but gratefully received the late availability of Dave Bamforth and Darren Lewis, which at least, gave the visitors a fighting chance.
Rink scores:
Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Dave Bamforth, Alan Lowndes 24-19
Colin Howson, Darren Lewis, Paul Cooper, Martin Hopkins 7-27
Mark Krawiecki, Barrie Thomas, Denzl Thomas, Mike Britton 17-23
Ian Broxton, Bryn Owen, Chris Locke, Adrian Bevan 18-24
Sadly, no food at St Joseph's but a few players went back to their Whitchurch Rd headquarters to enjoy a few drinks with the hosts and distractedly watched the England cricket team apparently heading for a 2-0 defeat in the Ashes at Lord's.

Wednesday 21st June Pentyrch 56 - 71 St Alban's
A week on from last week's away win at St Alban's and a reverse. Pentyrch won two rinks as did the visitors but the visitors superior points difference won them the match.

Saturday 17th June Cardiff Athletic 101 - 61 Pentyrch
****** I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For ******
or ****** Hear My Train a Comin' ******
So, another fixture disrupted by crosstown traffic problems caused by a city centre event - Cardiff Pride: although entry to the Cardiff Athletic green was much easier than anticipated, as a security guard raised the barrier blocking Castle Street Castle Street to cars with occupants wearing Pentyrch Bowling Club shirts! Everyone arrived on time, except for Andrew Herbert who made the dubious decision of taking the train to beat the expected road delays - and almost made it. He must be the first ever Pentyrch player to have travelled to a match by train.
Always a spectacular place to play bowls in the shadow of the Cardiff Arms Park and Principality stadia. Today, not only the spectacular location but the constant playlist of well known pop and rock songs blasting away from the Pride celebrations at Cardiff Castle a few hundred yards away.
Rink scores:
Ian Broxton, Jim Martin, Alan Lowndes and Paul Cooper, making his debut were the closest to getting a win with a very commendable 16-17 defeat. Far away, so close.
Mark Krawiecki, Keith Davies, Dave Ashmore and Adrian Bevan also played well showing resilience in a close tussle, losing 19-21 having gone 19-19 into the last end. The picture below of two woods around the jack were bowled by Adrian - you can't touch this. (One was a toucher!)
Iain Russell, John Cahill Dickenson, Chris Locke and Mike Britton recovered slightly after a car crash start to lose 14-32. Oh well!
Brian Ilbery, Colin Howson, Andrew Herbert and Martin Hopkins also found the going hard and met their Waterloo, finishing 12-31 down.
Thanks to Dave Ashmore, Mike Britton and Paul Cooper coming in to play at short notice. Substitute(s)
Thanks also to Cardiff Athletic for the excellent playing surface, friendship and hospitality and to Cardiff Pride - Thank You for the Music.
(How many songs, references can you find? - no prizes)
To Ally at GB Britton Bowls Club Bristol - one for you - despite this defeat we are still alive and kicking.

A second away win in a row in the Cardiff Mid Week League at Rumney Hill Gardens, home of St Albans and Rumney Gardens Bowls Clubs. So the Trychs can be pleased with another win.

Wednesday 7th June Roath Park 49 - 69 Pentyrch
****** Fix You ******
A solid away win at Roath Park in the warm June sun, welcome after last Saturday's PG1 defeat. In fact, the first all 4 rink win this season. Another away fixture in the city with traffic to contend with generated by some band called Coldplay on their second night at the Principality Stadium.
Rink scores:
Iain Russell, John Cahill Dickenson, Chris Locke and Jordan Napper won 16-12.
Brian Ilbery, Bryn Owen, Dan Price and Gavin Davidson won 15-10.
Colin Howson, Ian Broxton, Denzil Thomas and Adrian Bevan won 19-12.
Steve Bollschweiler, Darren Lewis, Gordon Tucker and Martin Hopkins won 19-15.
Noted by Ian Broxton that 10 of the players in this team joined the club only in the last three years.

Saturday 3rd June Pentyrch 60 - 76 Llantwit Major
****** Straight Back Down to Earth ******
A very warm sunny afternoon greeted the visitors from Llantwit Major - their first ever visit to Parc y Dwrlyn: they went home with a win under their belts in this EWPGBA match. The fastest green for some time took some getting accustomed to bringing the need to play with controlled weight.
Rink scores:
Mark Krawiecki, John Cahill Dickenson, Stepehen Evans (making his debut) and Gavin Davidson were persistent and resilient, grinding out a win 18-17.
Barrie Thomas, Bryn Owen, Andrew Herbert and Jordan Napper did things the hard way, contriving to go 4-17 down and almost pulling off a great escape to draw 18-18.
Brian Ilbery, Jim Martin, Mike Britton and Gordon Tucker had a tough afternoon losing 9-21.
Cloin Howson, Denzil Thomas, Alan Lowndes and Adrian Bevan let things get away before staging a mini comeback that proved not to be enough finish 15-20 down.
We now have a break next Saturday because of the tour to Torquay, so we will be looking for our first PG win at Cardiff Athletic on the 17th June.

Wednesday 31st May Taffs Well 65 - 66 Pentyrch
****** History Boys! or Heroes ******
From the ridiculous to the sublime. The Tyrchs travelled the short distance down Heol Goch to Taffs Well with what could fairly be described as a patched up team. A team that had been nonchalantly swept aside at the weekend. A team put together after many What's App messages, texts, 'phone calls, cajoling and persuading. Expectations of a favourable result were therefore low. However, to a man, the visitors rose to the occasion magnificently and under the leadership of Vice Captain Gordon Tucker in only his third match as Captain, pulled off a win at Taffs Well. Not many, if any (can anyone contradict this?) can claim to have achieved this.
Further context as to how great this victory was: many regular and established players were unavailable, many players playing out of position, four players new to the game this year - Mike Britton, Dan Price, Chris Locke and Peter O'Reilly in his first ever match, Ed Brookman coming in as a late reserve and Bryn Owen for his first match of the season. They all rose to the occasion magnificently. A new standard has been set and higher expectations follow.
The familiar names of the Taffs Well skips on the non-winning rinks must be sick after so many wins over Pentyrch over the years. Even Ian Best had a scare. They seemed to take it in good spirit. Thanks to Taffs Well for the match, a green that bowled well, the friendship, hospitality and rivalry.

Saturday 27th May Pentyrch 44 - 125 Llanbradach A
****** Trampled Underfoot ******
Thanks to Chris Locke and Dan Price on making their debuts for Pentyrch and many players taking to the green in unaccustomed positions on a tough afternoon. This against a very strong opposition who will surely be amongst the favourites to be promoted. Keep right on to the end of the road. Enough said.
Wednesday 24th May Pentyrch 80 - 47 Fairoak
The fifth match of the season and a first win. The victory was under the leadership of Gordon Tucker, making his debut as Vice Captain - not only the winning captain but on the best rink too. Well done to him and all the team. Fairoak were the visitors for this Cardiff Midweek League fixture and a warm and sunny Pentyrch evening.
Biggest winners were Iain Russell, John Cahill Dickenson, Gordon Tucker and John Beacham (unfortunately had to withdraw towards the end with arm pain) 26-7. Mark Krawiecki, Barrie Thomas, Alan Lowndes and Martin Hopkins, let a 7-2 lead dwindle to 7-6 before getting into a steady rhythm to finish 25-12 up. Steve Bollschweiller, Darren Lewis, Denzil Thomas and Jordan Napper were 2-7 down at the 6th end then began a comeback that hardly faltered showing good resilience and winning 19-12. Colin Howson, standing as skip late in the day, Gavin Davidson, Adrian Bevan and Kieran Bosquette (coming in as reserve) lost a creditable 10-16 given the late changes and having been 1-14 down at the 12th end.
Overall, a very good team effort. Over the next few matches, the selectors are drawing from a small pool and it is really encouraging to see the determination of everyone to succeed. The selectors are grateful for everyone's co-operation and understanding - it will be worth it. A number of relatively inexperienced players are playing out of position, new players are rising to the challenge of match play and the more experienced players are supporting the general effort. Thanks to reserves, Kieran for standing in and to Mike Britton who also came as a reserve and support.
The pasties were welcome after the match. Big thanks too, to Jim Martin for running the bar and clearing up.

Wednesday 17 May Mackintosh 88 - 44 Pentyrch
****** A Hard Day's Night ******
A hard day's night at the Mackintosh as the Tyrchs fought the traffic chaos caused by the appearance of Beyonce Knowles at the nearby Principality Stadium. A heavy defeat but with one drawn rink and one winning rink, the 'best' result so far.
Mark Krawiecki (on a return to his bowling alma mater), Darren Lewis, Dave Bamforth and Martin Hopkins were blown away comprehensively 31-3. Ian Broxton, Steve Bollschweiler, Jim Martin and Kieran Bosquette lost heavily too: 24-7. Iain Russell, John Cahill-Dickenson, Gordon Tucker and debutant Mike Britton, after an uncertain start fought well with the lead changing hand several times before ending neatly 18-18 after 18 ends. Iain Russell drawing shot with the final bowl of the match. Brian Ilbery, Colin Howson, Gavin Davidson and Adrian Bevan went one better with a 16-15. Well done to them. Thanks to the Mack as usual for good after food, hospitality, company and bizarre raffle.
No Saturday fixture, so home to Fairoak on Wednesday 24th May.

Saturday 13th May - Pentyrch 44 - 100 St Joseph's
****** Hey Joe (s) ******
The first Private Greens match of the season and we welcomed St Joseph's to Pentyrch on fine, sunny spring afternoon. St Joseph's may prove to be one of the stronger teams in division 4 (having been relegated from Division 3 last season), and certainly showed strength in depth in their performance.
Mark Krawiecki, Barrie Thomas, Dave Bamforth and Martin Hopkins showed resilience and determination in achieving a 16-16 draw, slightly disappointing having been 13-7 ahead at one stage. The other rinks were overwhelmed to a greater or lesser extent.
Brian Ilbery, Colin Howson, Andrew Herbert & Adrian Bevan 6-27
Iain Russell, John Cahill-Dickenson, Gordon Tucker & Alan Lowndes 12-35
Ian Broxton, Keith Davies, Denzil Thomas & Kieran Bosquette 10-22
Thanks to Jim Martin for being Reserve.

Wednesday 10th May - Pentyrch 45 - 70 Whitchurch
With no fixture the previous Saturday, everyone was keen to be out bowling again and for the first home match of the season. We welcomed Whitchurch whom we had beaten home and away last year. After days of heavy showers, the sun was out but an unseasonal chill was still prominent.
A strong Whitchurch team dominated proceedings, finishing with a wide margin of shots and three winning rinks. Mark Krawiecki, Barrie Thomas, Dave Bamforth and Martin Hopkins were the winners 16-14, in a very closely fought contest , 8-2 up at the 7th end then the visitors having a strong run back to only 12-11 at the 14th end. The visitors scored 3 at the 17th to set up the 18th end with the score 15-14 to Pentyrch. One shot at the last end gave the home rink a 16-14 win. Iain Russell, John Cahill-Dickenson, Andrew Herbert and John Beacham were leading 7-5 at the 10th end then dropped 7 in the next two ends, scoring only two more shots to finish 9-19 down. Ian Broxton, Darren Lewis, Jordan Napper and Gavin Davidson had a difficult evening and finished 9-21 down. Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Jim Martin and Alan Lowndes were competitive, only 10-11 down at the 13th end, then the visitors won four of the last five ends finishing 16-11 up. Thanks to Denzil Thomas and Adrian Hopkins for turning up as Reserves.
A home Private Greens match vs. St Joseph's follows on Saturday.

Wednesday 3rd May - Whitchurch Hospital 81 - 56 Pentyrch
The first match of the season: later than usual because of poor weather and delayed pre-season work on our green. Nonetheless, it was good to be out bowling 'in anger' again at Whitchurch Hospital on a green that took some getting accustomed to, given its much faster pace than our home green. A cold fresh breeze greeted the Tyrchs and it continued to blow a real and metaphoric chill throughout the evening.
Unfortunately, a defeat and all visitors' rinks going down. Mark Krawiecki, Andrew Herbert, Dave Bamforth and Ed Brookman lost 17-12. Ian Broxton, Barrie Thomas, Jim Martin and Gavin Davidson lost 25-15. Brain Ilbery, Darren Lewis, Denzil Thomas and Adrian Bevan lost 22-15. Iain Russell, John Cahill-Dickenson, Colin Howson and John Beacham with the lowest deficit lost 17-14. Thanks to Martin Hopkins for turning up as Reserve.
Thanks to Whitchurch Hospital for their traditional friendship and for their warm hospitality in their new post-match venue of the skittle alley of the Earl Haig Club.
