****** Not quite enough? ******
Saturday 10th September, Pentyrch 62 - 75 Troedyrhiw
The last match of the EWPGA league and the last match of the season: both teams with added motivation to win. Pentyrch only 4 points above Cardiff Athletic (playing at mid table Sully Sports) in the relegation spot and Troedyrhiw only requiring 2 points to snatch promotion from Penarth. Pentyrch were expecting a tough match without the added pressures of the day, having succumbed to their heaviest defeat of the season in the corresponding away fixture at Troedyrhiw at the beginning of July (see below). So, "All to play for", "Game on" and other such cliches.
Before the contest on the green began, both teams assembled quietly and respectfully for a minute's silence in recognition of the very recent passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II. Club Captain, Ian Broxton gathered the players together for an immaculately held minute of reflection and prayer.
Then onto the match itself. Pentyrch had two winning rinks.
Iain Russell, Ian Broxton, Denzil Thomas and Barrie Thomas won 15-12 played in a closely fought contest with the lead for both teams changing a couple of times. with the scores 10-10 at the 15th end, the home team went ahead 11-10 and managed to keep ahead to win 15-12. Some excellent bowls from both teams. Brian Ilbery, Bernie Simpson, John Cahill Dickenson and Jim Martin won convincingly 23-9 - this was an assured and confident performance from all four home players, especially from the 13th end after which they only lost one end finishing with a 4 at the final end as solid exclamation mark. Well done! Peter Stuart, Bryn Owen, Keiran Bosquette and Dave Ashmore seemed to be in strong control being 10-3 up at the 8th end then failing to score until the 16th end by which time they were 13-10 down. They then rallied to be in a strong position 18-14 up at the 19th end. However, a stunning blow of a 7 from the opponents meant they were 21-18 down at the 20th, then dropping 1 at the last to lose 22-18. Unfortunately, John Davies, Colin Howson, John Beacham and Adrian Bevan had one of the dayd that is best forgotten as quickly as possible. They came up against a team that were too strong only scoring at 5 ends to go down 6-32.
The result meant that Troedyrhiw would be promoted in second place. Pentyrch earned 4 league points that without knowledge of any result from the Sully Sports v Cardiff Athletic match, Pentyrch were 8 points above Cardiff Athletic, with Cardiff in the relegation spot. There were unconfirmed rumours on Saturday evening that Cardiff had had 3 winning rinks at Sully. As this report is published, there is no confirmation of the final result and league placings. photos & report MK

Post script: Cardiff Athletic won 80-61 with three winning rinks and therefore gaining 12 league points to finish 4 points above Pentyrch.
****** Mackintosh mission accomplished ******
Saturday 3rd September, Mackintosh 69 - 82 Pentyrch
The shadow of potential relegation was looming over the Tyrchs for their visit to the Mackintosh and ominous rain clouds reflected the threatening atmosphere. Given the latest standings of league positions, a good win was vital. The visitors rallied well and did not let themselves down coming away with 10 precious league points that took them out of the relegation zone. Congratulations to all on a great effort!
Iain Russell with Ian Broxton, Jordon Napper ( a late and promising recruit) and Barrie Thomas dominated their opponents winning 23-9. Peter Stuart, Bryn Owen, Keiran Bosquette and Dave Ashmore also won handsomely 28-16. Brian Ilbery, Bernie Simpson, Gordon Tucker and Adrian Bevan lost 16-22. John Davies, Colin Howson, Alan Lowndes and John Beacham lost 15-22.
Other results on Saturday mean that a very tense final day to the season has been set up. Pentyrch are 4 points ahead of Cardiff Athletic who are in the relegation spot. The Tyrchs are at home to Troedyrhiw who can still be promoted. Cardiff Athletic are away to Sully Sports who are in a safe mid table position. The stakes are high but the Tyrchs have shown with this win at the Mackintosh that they are good enough and that their destiny is in their own hands. MK photos JB

****** Tyrchs fall short ******
Saturday 27th August, Pentyrch 56 - 64 Sully Sports
With fixtures running out and Pentyrch in the second relegation spot, this was an important opportunity to take a decent haul of points against Sully Sports and Pentyrch were hopeful that they could. Unfortunately, the home side fell short and now face Mackintosh away next Saturday and Troedyrhiw at home on the last match of the season and need to win both well to have any chance of staying in Division 4. The visitors arrived to a very warm and sunny Pentyrch, also with the intention of getting a positive result. Things did not start well even before getting on the green, with Mark Krawiecki's rink having to play one player down.
Mark Krawiecki with Keith Davies and Jim Martin played with 6 woods v 8 and managed to draw 14-14 but felt that despite determined effort and with slightly better fortune they should have won. 12-9 ahead at the 14th end then dropped a 2 and unlucky 3 in successive ends scoring 1 each in the final two of 18 ends to draw. John Davies with Ian Broxton, Barrie Thomas and Dave Bamforth, after winning the first end, went behind after the third end and never regained parity not scoring as highly as the visitors on ends that they won eventually finishing 11-20 down. Peter Stuart, John Cahill Dickenson, Colin Howson and Gavin Davidson won an equal number of ends as their opposing rink but didn't score as highly on ends they won and ran out 11-15 losers. Pentyrch's winning rink skipped by Iain Russell with Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker and Adrian Bevan actually only won 8 ends to Sully's 10 but scored highly at winning ends with two 4's and a 5 giving them a 20-15 win.
So, 3 points from a possible 14 was not good enough and the Tyrchs will need to rally strongly and hope that other results go in their favour. MK

****** Barry Romilly dented ******
Wednesday 24th August, Barry Romilly 75 - 51 Pentyrch
This was the rescheduled PG fixture that was postponed on the hottest weekend of the year earlier in the month. Damp, grey and certainly cooler weather welcomed the visitors to runaway league leaders, Barry Romilly. A beautiful looking playing surface proved to be a pleasure to bowl on with it's consistent response. The seaside team's dominance largely prevailed giving them the overall victory. Huge congratulations go to Peter Stuart's rink who with John Cahill Dickenson, Gordon Tucker and Gavin Davidson prevailed over their opponents leading from start to finish to win 17-14. Iain Russell, Brian Ilbery, Ian Broxton and Barrie Thomas were even with the hosts to the 8th end at 6-6 then fell behind and could not respond enough to regain parity, finishing 13-21 down. Mark Krawiecki with Keith Davies, Bryn Owen and Adrian Bevan still felt optimistic at 5-4 up at the 7th end then a dropped 4 signalled a time for the hosts to show their superiority. The visitors only scored 3 more shots against 18, losing 8-22. John Davies with Colin Howson, Jim Martin and Dave Bamforth were in largely a game of two halves being 15-5 down at the 10th end then scored 8 v 3 from the 11th end finishing 13-18 down. So, the visitors' winning rink took 2 points from the home team who march on to their inevitable promotion. The visitors now prepare for a crucial home match against Sully Sports on Bank Holiday Saturday. Thanks to former long time Pentyrch member & player and now Barry resident, Tim Morgan for many of the images. MK
****** Cardiff Athletic win at last ******
Saturday 20th August, Cardiff Athletic 100 - 50 Pentyrch
This was the fourth meeting of the two sides this season, this final meeting in the city centre in the shadow of the Cardiff Rugby and Principality rugby stadia. And finally, for Cardiff Athletic, a win and a big one too in a crucial PG match. Three rinks lost for Pentyrch skipped by Mark Krawiecki, John Davies and Peter Stuart. The winning rink for Pentyrch was skipped by Iain Russell with Brian Ilbery, Keiran Bosquette and Barrie Thomas. They won 20-19 by one shot at the final end. Congratulations to them for keeping right on to the end of the road! A trip to league leaders Barry Romilly this coming Wednesday evening for a rearranged PG fixture. MK, pics by JB
****** Hat-Trick! ******
Saturday 23rd July, Pentyrch 78 - 72 Cardiff Athletic
Three days on from their midweek home defeat to the Tyrchs, Cardiff Athletic came to a damp and rainy Pentyrch for the third meeting of the two sides this season. The home team prevailed by 4 shots leaving Cardiff sick of the sight of Pentyrch. This was a bottom of the table relegation clash in Division 4 of the East Wales Private Greens League: a win was vital for both teams, with Cardiff having played two matches less. Rink scores below:
John Davies, with Adrian Bevan, Dave Ashmore and Colin Howson won 20-19
Ian Broxton, with John Beacham, Gavin Davidson and Barrie Thomas won 21-16.
Brian Ilbery, with John Cahill Dickenson, Denzil Thomas and Bernie Simpson won 23-19
Peter Stuart, with Darren Lewis, Gordon Tucker and Keith Davies lost 14-18. MK, BI, pics JB

****** Trampled at Troedyrhiw ******
Saturday 9th July, Troedyrhiw 120 - 47 Pentyrch
Trampled, trounced, tragedy - any such alliterative words could have made the headline. This was the first time that Pentyrch had played at and against Troedyrhiw and they could be forgiven not to wanting to visit again after such a crushing, though not total defeat - one rink won and salvaged some hint of pride. The heatwave of July was cranking up as the visitors arrived at the very green, lush and pleasant setting of Troedyrhiw Bowls Club. The shade from the trees at the railway end, thankfully increased as the afternoon progressed. The green was fast and genearlly the visitors found difficulty in adjusting against opponents who played well and dominated on the day.
Congratulations to Iain Russell, Keith Davies, John Beacham and Adrian Bevan who after a rocky start, gradually came back into the game and with a 5 at the 14th end were leading 16-8, then only scoring 2 more thereafter, but holding on to win 18-14. "Best" losing rink, Mark Krawiecki, Brian Ilbery, John Eagle and Martin Hopkins at only 7-8 down at the 9th end seemed to be coping but then a 5,4 and 2 conceded between the 11th and 13th ends from which they could not recover, struggled with the pace and against a team that man for man bowled better, lost 13-26. John Davies, Colin Howson, Alan Lowndes and John Cahill Dickenson were hit hard and were 15-1 down after 6 ends, eventually finishing 34-9 down. Ian Broxton, Bernie Simpson, Bryn Owen and Gordon Tucker were under relentless pressure throughout and were metaphorically hit as if by one of the trains trundling past yards from the green towards Merthyr, losing 11-42. So, a hard loss to take and worth noting that the Tyrchs conceded one more shot in this defeat than they did at Cowbridge earlier in the season on their artificial surface. We look forward to the 10th September for the return fixture at Pentyrch for the chance to make some amends for today.
Thank you to Troedyrhiw for their hospitality and graciousness in victory. MK & pics by MK

****** Mackintosh hit back or unlucky 4 or lesson not learnt? ******
Wednesday 6th July, Mackintosh 70 - 55 Pentyrch
Another match v The Mackintosh only five days since the last encounter - this time at their magnificent castellated home at Keppoch Street, wonderful legacy of Lord Mackintosh of Mackintosh. (Follow this one link of many of the fascinating history here. The match was played on a thirsty looking green that was certainly faster than the Tyrch's home green.
The Mack team proved just as determined as they had five days previously and this time were the overall victors winning on three rinks. Brian Ilbery, Bryn Owen, Denzil Thomas and Adrian Bevan sneaked home 17-16 despite dropping a 4 at the final end - well done to them. Mark Krawiecki, Barrie Thomas, Gavin Davidson and Martin Hopkins also dropped 4 at the final end but having been 13-13 at the 17th, lost by 4. Special mentions here for Gavin Davidson who made his debut for the Tyrchs with a solid start and especially to Martin Hopkins who had a fantastic game at lead with several touchers including two at one end (see below). It seems that for some, there may be some creedence in 13 being an unlucky number with Ian Broxton, Gordon Tucker, Ed Brookman and Darren Lewis also 13-13 at the 17th end and also dropping 4 at the 18th to lose 17-13. Unlucky 13? That's the charitable theory - maybe it's just carelessness? John Davies, Colin Howson, Alan Lowndes and John Cahill Dickenson also dropping 4 at the final end to lose 20-12. 16 - 0 shots dropped as a team at the final end! Perhaps everyone was thinking of the post match jumbo sausage roll to soon?
Well done to the Mack, thanks for the great friendship and hospitality as ever. MK & pics

****** Top Club Competition ******
Sunday 3rd July, Pentyrch 1 - 4 Penylan
The East Wales Private Greens have organised a new competition this season with 11 players from each club contesting five events: Two Wood Singles, 4 Wood Singles, 3 Wood Pairs, 2 Wood Triples and a rink. Pentyrch faced a strong Penylan team. Congratulations go to Darren Lewis who won the one and only event for the Tyrchs in the 2 Wood Singles. Ian Broxton lost in the 4 Wood Singles, Mark Krawiecki and Ian Russell lost in the pairs, Brian Ilbery, Bob Hoskins, and Adrian Bevan lost in the Triples with Peter Stuart, John Davies, Colin Howson & John Cahill Dickenson going down in the rinks. An exciting format with a competitive edge. Match scores below, click onto the image to see the complete card. MK
****** Keep Right on to the End of the Road ******
Saturday 2nd July, Pentyrch 72 - 70 Mackintosh
This was a closely contested PG1 match at home to good friends and rivals from the Mackintosh Club. This was the first day of the Pentyrch Open Gardens weekend but very few visitors and therefore potential new members showed themselves during the day. The Mackintosh team looked good in their new shirts with the traditional tartan trim incorporated onto the sides. Pentyrch scraped home to win by two shots but lost three rinks. At one stage Pentyrch looked as if they might win all four rinks but the three losing rinks all faded badly in the last 5 ends conceding 5-23 shots between them.
Peter Stuart, Bryn Owen, Gordon Tucker and John Cahill Dickenson were 3 down after two ends but then took the lead and never looked back winning strongly 20-10. Ian Broxton, Brian Ilbery, Don Wibley and Barrie (supersub) Thomas recovered quickly from being 0-7 down after two ends to be 20-14 up at the 16th end, conceding 7 shots in the last 4 ends to lose 20-21. Mark Krawiecki, Denzil Thomas, Adrian Bevan (thanks to Adrian for stepping in at short notice) and Ed Brookman raced away with a 4 at the first end and proceeded to have a close match trading the lead several times with the Mack: 8-8 on the 8th end, 13-13 on the 13th end and 16-16 on the 16th end and then wilted conceding 5 to 1 shots to lose 21-17. John Davies, Colin Howson, Keiran Bosquette and John Beacham were 13-10 up at the 16th end and then also let the Mack back in, conceding 2-8 shots in the last 5 ends. There is an obvious moral in this tale. As Harry Lauder once sang "Keep right on to the end of the road!"
We resume hostilities with the Mackintosh at Keppoch Street next Wednesday in the midweek league.

****** Double over Whitchurch ******
Wednesday 29th June, Whitchurch 55 - 69 Pentyrch
A short trip south down the hill towards Cardiff and on to Whitchurch for the tough return midweek fixture was the mission for the Tyrchs this Wednesday evening after the beating at the weekend. The gloomy damp weather was a threatening portent of trouble ahead that did not materialise for the visitors. A good solid team performance meant we did the double over Whitchurch this season having won the home fixture on the 4th May.
Peter Stuart, Bryn Owen, Ed Brookman and Darren Lewis won with the largest margin. John Davies, Colin Howson, Alan Lowndes and Gordon Tucker won comfortably too. Mark Krawiecki, Ian Broxton, Keiran Bosquette and John Cahill Dickenson won 16-14. Iain Russell, Brian Ilbery, Denzil Thomas and John Eagle came up against a Whitchurch rink skipped by a young and very talented bowler who played an inspirational match leading his four to a win. Thanks again to Barrie Thomas - supersub.
A great win and double that prompted Captain Ian Broxton to comment on the newly created team What's App group "It takes 16 to make a team. And everyone contributed to this excellent result. I was so proud." MK (no photos - phone died!)

****** Sinking by the Seaside ******
Saturday 25th June, Penarth 100 - 67 Pentyrch
This was a day of turbulent weather with black brooding skies, torrential downpours of sometimes biblical proportions, thunder, hail and lightning yet also warm and calm sunshine. Ironically, the inclement weather held off, just, while the players were on the green: however there were turbulent times on the green in terms of the result for Pentyrch. It was also wonderful to play on a very good playing surface.
Well done ot Iain Russell, Bryn Owen, Don Wibley (still going!) and Keiran Bosquette who were the only winning rink for the Tyrchs holding on for a 21-20 win. John Davies, Colin Howson, Denzil Thomas and John Cahill Dickenson were leading 17-12 at the 15th end and then could score no more finishing 17-20 down. Peter Stuart, Brian Ilbery, Jim Martin and Gordon Tucker were 3-3 at the 2nd end and then never level or in front eventually losing 18-27. Mark Krawiecki, Ian Broxton, John Eagle and Bernie Simpson suffered the heaviest defeat 11-33. The omens weren't good conceding a 4 at the first end, winning eight ends with 1's and 2's but merrily dropping two 4's and two 5's on the way. Well done to Penarth and thanks for great company, hospitality and catering.
A spectacular hail storm accompanied by thunder and lightning sent the visitors on their way. MK

****** What a Difference a Week Makes ******
Wednesday 22nd June, Pentyrch 107 - 26.75 Rumney Gardens
And so, as with Cowbridge at the beginning of June, within the space of a week, the Tyrchs were heavily beaten away at Rumney Gardens and spectacularly turned the result around at home seven days later. The opponents from Rumney, only the second time at Parc y Dwrlyn, (there was a previous encounter in the Carruthers Shield) arrived two players short so were already weakened but Pentyrch also raised their game which meant a dominant performance. Pentyrch were also short of one player but were lucky to be bolstered by the lively Barrie Thomas who, as a supporter, was on hand to generously volunteer to help out in his own colourful way. Thanks Barrie.
Brian Ilbery, Ian Broxton, Keith Davies and Jim Martin only lost 5 ends against a full rink winning 27-7. Iain Russell, Bernie Simpson, Denzil Thomas and John Eagle played a triple winning 19-8.75. Peter Stuart, Colin Howson, Bryn Owen and Darran Lewis won biggest, 33-5. John Davies, Mark Krawiecki, Alan Lowndes and Barrie Thomas. Penarth away in the PG league next Saturday. MK

Wednesday 15th June, Rumney Gardens - Pentyrch
An away loss to Rumney Gardens. Despite a lack of availability of men to play in this MWL fixture, Pentyrch were able to field a full 16 thanks to three ladies (picture right) playing for the Tyrchs. Thank you to the ladies. The opposition also had ladies playing in the match. Sadly, a sign of the times for a number of teams in the bowls world.
1 point was gained by the rink of John Davies, Nicola Olson, John Cahill Dickenson and Alan Lowndes who drew. JD |
****** St Peter's hit the rocks! ******
Wednesday 8th June, Pentyrch 77 - 41 St Peter's
After the recent reshake of the leagues, it was the first time for Pentyrch to welcome St Peter's Bowls Club to Parc y Dwrlyn. Unfortunately for them, it was to meet a team looking to bounce back from the Jubilee Massacre at Cowbridge. The Tyrchs finished with a solid result to boost confidence again. All rinks put up good performances on a chilly June evening.
Peter Stuart, Brian Ilbery, Alan Lowndes and Martin Hopkins lead the way with a massive 34-6 victory, always ahead in free scoring mode with two 5's and a 6 emphasising their dominance.
Mark Krawiecki, Bernie Simpson, Denzil Thomas and John Cahill Dickenson had a close match until the 9th end when the St Peter's stubborn resistance began to fade and from 7-6 up the Pentyrch rink won 18-9. It is to be noted that JCD is becoming more confident as a lead and is putting in increasingly consistent performances.
Ian Broxton, Jim Martin, John Eagle and Dave Ashmore were looking very assured at 12-3 up at the 7th end, letting the opposition back to 16-10 at the 15th end then conceded 5 shots in the last three ends to sneak home 16-15. Still, a win is a win.
John Davies, Colin Howson, John Beacham and Darran Lewis had a close low scoring match and were 9-9 at the 16th end losing the last two ends by one shot each to lose 9-11 overall.
A good team win. No fixture this Saturday, so a chance for people to play club competitions before the June deadline for first rounds. MK

****** Revenge for Cowbridge! ******
Saturday 4th June, Cowbridge 119 - 52 Pentyrch
What a difference a week makes! Having inflicted a heavy defeat against Cowbridge seven days ago, the tables were spectacularly turned on the visitors from Pentyrch and with interest. The concern of playing on the unfamiliar artificial surface proved founded. Congratulations to Cowbridge who took full advantage of their knowledge and experience of the surface. The photographs below also don't show that the unseasonally strong wind also had an impact on the game changing the course of some woods on the low friction surface. The Platinum Jubilee theme of the weekend was reflected with Union Jacks and bunting decorating the clubhouse.
All four rinks lost to varying degrees:
John Davies, Colin Howson, Alan Lowndes and Adrian Bevan lost 26-16 with the lowest deficit. They raced ahead with a 6-0 lead after 4 ends then failed to score until the 12th end by which time they were 10-6 down. They rallied to 10-9 and were then inundated with a 6 and 3. The home team then dominated finishing with 3 shots at the 21st end to win 26-16.
Mark Krawiecki, Ian Broxton, Barrie Thomas and John Cahill Dickenson lost 27-13 and gave a good account of themselves, holding the lead until the 12th end when 10-9 up. The home team then began to dominate becoming more consistent as the visitors' concentration wavered and were worn down only scoring 3 more shots at two ends while the home team score often emphasising their dominance with 5 shots at the 21st end - a metaphoric exclamation mark.
Peter Stuart, Brian Ilbery, Jim Martin and John Beacham lost 31-15 were behind from the start and never recovered to be level or take the lead. 4 shots at the 10th end took them within 4 shots and that was as good as it got.
Iain Russell, Bryn Owen, Denzil Thomas and Martin Hopkins took the first end 1-0 and led for that first end, thereafter they were behind unable to make an impression, losing 35-8.
It was a difficult afternoon for all the Tyrchs but should be taken in the context of playing on such an unfamiliar surface that is very challenging for many other experienced teams , let alone for inexperienced bowlers of whom there are some in our team. Time to pick ourselves and get on with the next match. It's only a game after all in a world when much worse things are going on. Thanks to Cowbridge for their hospitality and good grace in victory. ****** Wellmen strike to end the run! ******
Wednesday 1st June, Taff's Well 92 - 46 Pentyrch

****** Hat Trick! ******
Sunday 29th May, Pentyrch 85 - 71 Rhiwbina
Would Jubilee've it? A hat trick of wins for the Tyrchs with the third home win in five days. This was against a Rhiwbina team who arrived confident of a win or draw to progress through to the knockout stages of the WBA Carruther's Shield. This game was rearranged from the previous weekend to make way for the club annual tour which in turn had been rearranged due to hotels being booked up for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The visitors were certainly surprised by the solid start by Pentyrch and their surprise turned to resignation as they realised the needed win would elude them and that Llantrisant would benefit from their demise. Indeed, two Llantrisant players spent the afternoon quietly watching the proceedings, rubbing their hands in anticipation as they realised the Tyrchs were going to do them a favour. Barrie Thomas was the home support.
So to the rink scores:
John Davies, Colin Howson, Alan Lowndes and Brian Ilbery narrowly lost by 20-24. Peter Stuart, Bernie Simpson, Gordon Tucker and Darran Lewis won 20-19 at the 21st end with the scores level 19-19. Iain Russell with Keith Davies (first appearance of the season), Denzil Thomas and John Beacham after being behind for the first three ends took control for the rest of the match winning comfortably 21-13. Mark Krawiecki (still unbeaten as skip) with Ian Broxton, John Cahill Dickenson and Adrian Bevan relinquished a 4-0 start after three ends to be 4-5 down after five ends but then took the lead and kept it to the end of the match winning 24-15. Some good bowls from the home team and encouragement that recent additions to the team are settling well into the sport. Taff's Well coming up midweek and then new territory at Cowbridge next Saturday. photos by JB & MK

****** Ton up! ******
Saturday 28th May, Pentyrch 105 - 54 Cowbridge
This was the first time for the Men's team to play against Cowbridge. And what a way to start with over a hundred shots - something that has not happened for a long time to any Pentyrch side, certainly not in the memory of the author. Three rinks won and one lost by a single shot.
Iain Russell with Bryn Owen, John Beacham and Adrian Bevan romped home 31-11. Peter Stuart, Barrie Thomas (good to see him back), Gordon Tucker and Darran Lewis lost 19-20. Captain Ian Broxton with Bernie Simpson, Denzil Thomas and John Cahill Dickenson won 29-9. Finally, John Davies, Colin Howson, Alan Lowndes and Brian Ilbery completed the emphatic win with a 26-14 victory.
The Tyrchs travel to Cowbridge next weekend and the Cowbridge men will be looking for quick revenge on their artificial surface which will be a challenge for Pentyrch. MK

****** Return to winning ways ******
Wednesday 25th May, Pentyrch 78 - 60 Cardiff Athletic
Unseasonably, cold, grey and blustery weather welcomed our opponents, Cardiff Athletic from the big city. Two weeks ago the Tyrchs were pipped at the post but tonight they put in a generally solid performance to see off the opposition by 18 shots.
The mrgin of victory was largely achieved by Peter Stuart, Bernie Simpson, Jim Martin and Darran Lewis with a 30-7 victory. Mark Krawiecki, Ian Broxton, Gordon Tucker and Adrian Bevan came out on top of a closely fought match by 13-12, the lead changing hands a few times. Iain Russell, Bryn Owen, John Eagle and John Cahill Dickenson frustratingly lost by one shot 17-18 at the last end with another close match where the lead also changed often. John Davies, Colin Howson, Alan Lowndes and Brian Ilbery went down 18-23.
It was good to get a win at the start of a busy sequence three home matches in five days. MK

****** The Mack sneak it! ******
Wednesday 11th May, Pentyrch 48 - 49 Mackintosh
At lunchtime, you wouldn't have thought that this match would go ahead, so heavy was the rain with puddles standing on the green. By late afternoon a strong breeze and sun had dried the playing surface for the arrival of long time friends and rivals from The Mackintosh. The rain had been a welcome saturation for the thirsty green. As the score line shows, a very close run result going in The Mack's favour. Two rinks up and two down. Peter Stuart with Bryn Owen, Darran Lewis and Gordon Tucker had the most emphatic result, winning 20-6. Mark Krawiecki with Ian Broxton, Denzil Thomas and Dave Ashmore ground out a hard-earned 13-12 win. John Davies, Colin Howson, John Beacham and Ed Brookman had a 6-17 loss with Iain Russell, Bernie Simpson, Jim Martin and John Eagle going 9-14 down. After a quickly scoffed pasty and yet another golf joke from Captain Ian, some of the Mack players made a quick getaway for a skittles fixture! We look forward to another three fixtures with the Mack this season, including two in five days at the start of July.

****** Back Down to Earth ******
Saturday 7th May, Llantrisant 102 - 58 Pentyrch
The first of this season's Carruther's Shield qualifying matches was played at a largely sunny Llantrsiant. Recently, Pentyrch have usually come second at this venue and unfortunately that record continued today and back to reality after the recent win against Whitchurch. The main road up the hill to the centre of Llantrisant is currently closed for months of work to shore up a precarious wall and the Tyrchs could have done with some similar reinforcement on the green.
John Davies, well supported by Colin Howson, Adrian Bevan and John Beacham continued his winning record as skip with the only winning rink. Mark Krawiecki, Captain Ian Broxton, Keiran Bosquette and John Cahill Dickenson managed to fight out a creditable 17-17 draw, not helping themselves by dropping a 5 in the first half. Iain Russell's and Peter Stuart's rinks both went down. Enough said. The next WBA fixture is cancelled with St Alban's withdrawal and the third match at home to Rhiwbina has been rearranged for Sunday 29th May to accommodate the club annual tour. Thanks to Llantrisant for their welcome, playing the match in good spirit and for the post match hospitality.
Thanks to Don Wibley for coming to support. MK (photos mostly by JB)

****** Whitchurch face the backlash ******
Wednesday 4th May, Pentyrch 60 - 54 Whitchurch
The first competitive league match saw Whitchurch arrive on a sunny evening in Pentyrch for the first Cardiff Midweek League fixture. Whitchurch are one of the traditionally strong teams in South Wales and were favourites. Pentyrch were looking to make some amends from the last match played against Taffs Well. A great team effort from the Tyrchs saw them win by six shots against a formidable Whitchurch team, graciously admitted by the Whitchurch captain in the post match speeches. Winning rinks were skipped by Mark Krawiecki, Peter Stuart and John Davies with Ian Russell's rink going down. Well done to Captai Ian Broxton who put in a solid performance on the green whilst occasionally leaving the action to check that the post-match pasties didn't burn. Masterchef?
A tougher challenge awaits this coming Saturday with an away fixture at Llantrisant in the Carruther's Shield. MK (photos JB & MK)

****** Victory to the Wellmen! ******
Saturday 23rd April, Pentyrch 59 - 85 Taffs Well
The traditional opening fixture of the season against our local friends and rivals from Taffs Well in the Garth Cup took place at home. Usually, it is played at Taffs Well with a return leg later in the season. The second leg of the Garth Cup takes place on Wednesday 24th August, 5:30pm at Taffs Well. This Saturday, the Wellmen took the honours, winning on three rinks with an overall 26 point lead. Pentyrch's one winning rink was skipped by John Davies, assisted by Colin Howson, Denzil Thomas and Keiran Bosquette - a 20-19 win at the last end. Thanks to John Beacham for the pictures apart from the one of John Davies (by himself) MK
