****** Green matters ******
Tuesday 11th December - Bill Malcolm has been working hard on the green carrying out a lot of the maintenance that ensures we have a great playing surface during the summer months. Hes' been using the new machine to aerate the soil and improve the drainage. He has also brushed off the autumn debris leaving a healthy looking green. Thanks and appreciation, as ever to Bill, for all his mostly unseen but not unnoticed hard work.
****** November's Coffee Morning ******
The final Coffee Morning of the year took place on Friday 30th November. With the approach of Christmas, more than 30 people came along to enjoy delicious refreshments, warm drinks and good company with a festive theme. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped with food, drink, raffles tombolas etc and come along to support these events during the year. The nine Coffee Mornings have raised over £1200 which is vital to keep the club going. See you in March 2019 for the next Coffee Morning but before then, hopefully at the Christmas Cheese and Wine on Sunday 16th December, 4.00 pm at Pentyrch Rugby Club.
****** Cheese & Wine Ticket Error ******
Please note that there is a price error on tickets issued for the Cheese & Wine event on the 16th December. The price on tickets shows £4 which should read as £5, as with the cover letter that accompanied the tickets with the correct price of £5. Apologies for any confusion caused. Thank you. Diolch.
****** Coming soon... Cheese & Wine ******
The traditional Christmas Cheese and Wine will take place at Pentyrch Rugby Club on Sunday 16th December at 4.00 pm. A wonderful social event to get you in the mood for Christmas with delicious food and drink, raffle with amazing prizes and great company. Please make every effort to attend. All money raised goes to keep the club going. Tickets available soon. Thanks. Diolch.

****** Sweet Success for Eileen! ******
Well done to Eileen Boddington who ran a sweet stall at the Pentyrch Christmas Fayre on Saturday 17th November & raised a magnificent £126 for the club. Thank you to all of her customers & everyone who kindly made donations for her to sell. Merry Christmas! Nadolig LLawen!
****** October Coffee Morning ******
The penultimate Coffee Morning of the year took place on Friday 26th October. As ever, thanks to everyone who helped and who came along to support another successful morning. These events have become vital and integral in making the club sustainable and just as importantly provide great opportunities for people to socialise and enjoy each others' company. If you look at the recent, and all too sadly often reports of closed bowls, sports and social clubs, we realise how important our club and it's continuation is. Don't use it, lose it!
****** Chocolates and Sweets Needed! ******
Eileen Boddington is again running a confectionery stall at the Pentyrch Christmas Fayre this year. She runs the stall on behalf of the Bowls Club and last year made over £100 for the club. Please would you give any donations (over the value of £1 per item) to Eileen personally or at any of the forthcoming events listed below. Thank you.

****** SEPTEMBER COFFEE MORNING ******
****** FINALS WEEKEND ******
Finals Weekend takes place on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September. Order of play for both days below. Please come along and support the players and enjoy the days. Refreshments available.
****** Bingo Night ******
The Bingo Night on Tuesday 4th September raised a good total of £115, despite the low turnout. Thanks to Sheila for calling the numbers and to everyone who came to support. Big thanks, too, to the Social Committee for organizing the event. Without these events and the money raised by them, sadly, we are not sustainable and at the very least membership fees would have to rise significantly.
****** Path work. ******
Sunday 2nd September - Thanks to volunteers Brian Ilbery, Iain Russell, Owen Morris and Brian Pearce for helping to level the mounds of earth and removing the larger stones from the new path embankment. Much appreciated. A possible "reward" for losing rinks, in future?
****** August Coffee Morning ******
A glorious sunny morning greeted the customers and volunteers at the Coffee Morning on the last day of August. Over 30 people attended and helped to make £155 making a total of £800 raised through these events, so far. There are still three planned before the end of the year. Thanks to everyone in helping to raise vital funds for all the marvellous maintenance and improvements around the club.
****** Hedge Cutting #2 ******
Thursday 30th August - Thanks to everyone who helped to cut the "smaller" of the two hedges today. The surrounds of the green are now looking a lot tidier. The green itself is also recovering very well from the earlier summer heat, thanks to the rain but also thanks to Bill's continued hard work. The recent rolling has helped achieve a smoother playing surface.
****** Rotary Club ******
Please note that we have the honour of hosting The Rotary Club on the evening of Tuesday 21st August. They will have the use of the green and club facilities to play a game of bowls and socialise. Any volunteers who can help host and organise equipment would be most welcome. Thank you.
****** Bingo Night ******
Thanks to the Social Committee who have organised another social event - a fabulous Bingo Night that will take place at the Pavilion on the evening of Tuesday 4th September. Everyone welcome and encourage friends and relatives to join you. Please turn up at 6.30 pm for a 7.00 pm start. It promises to be a fun, light hearted evening to meet up, socialise and raise club funds. One of the main factors in building the Pavilion was to be able to stage more social events independently and this has been done very well. Please support. Thank you!
|
****** Hedge Cutting ******
On Monday 6th August the club arranged for help with cutting the hedge at the West (Tennis Club) end of the green. It now looks much neater and will allow more light to get to that side of the green. The work was paid for by money raised through social events, such as the Coffee Mornings, quizzes and bingo. The green itself is improving well after recent rainfall.
****** August Coffee Morning ******
Our next Coffee Morning takes places on Friday 31st August, the week before Finals Weekend. Please, make every effort to come along and support and help to keep raising precious funds to keep the club going. So far this year, money raised through social events has helped to pay for a new access path to the club, the cutting of the hedges, maintenance equipment for the green, repairs to the retaining wall of the green.

****** Race Night - postscript ******
The club has received two very generous donations in relation to the recent Horse Race Night that have boosted the total raised from the Race Night to the grand total of £1,500 - a magnificent sum to help with improvements and maintenance. Thank you!
****** Ladies' Two Wood Competition ******
Sunday 22nd July, the Ladies held an open Two Wood Competition, organised by Margaret K on another sweltering July day. They took part in the hot conditions and concentrated hard to control the bowls on a super fast green. The ladies played in two groups on a round robin basis with the winners of each group, Jan Berry and Margaret Krawiecka taking part in the final. Well done to Margaret Krawiecka who won the final. Thanks to everyone who took part and to the three supporters, Eileen, Mark and Owen.
****** A Grand Race Night! ******
Friday 20th July 2018 - the 5th Race Night and the most successful so far - over 100 tickets sold and a profit of £1,396 pounds! A fantastic achievement! The winning owners included Ian Broxton, Margaret Farmer, Barrie Thomas, Eileen Boddington and Howard Thomas who all won a bottle of wine. The winning trainers included Jamie Broxton, Dawn Parker, Idris James and Colin Howson: also winners of a bottle of wine. Howard Thomas won £80 for owning the winner of the "Auction Race" and Ian and Jamie Broxton won champagne and chocolates for owning and training the winner of the final "Winners' Race".
Thanks to everyone who supported the event by buying tickets and supporting on the night itself. Special thanks to Andrew and Ruth Davies for running the night, sponsors for the 9 races and donations of raffle prizes. Gareth Ilbery, Lynne Ilbery, Bernie and Val Simpson and Dave Ashmore for running the Tote. Jan Berry and Kath Morris for the raffle which made £203. Mark Krawiecki for the programme design. The Social Committee (Brian Ilbery, Jan Berry, Eileen Boddington and Margaret Davies for organising the whole event.

****** Fixture amendments ******
Please note that amendments to fixtures can be found on the Fixtures & Results 2018 page. Click on the previous link or on the navigation bar near the top of this page. Recent amendments include Men's Home PG1 fixture to Mackintosh now on Tuesday 25th July 6-00 pm. The Mixed Two Wood Competition now takes place on Sunday 19th August. Thank you.
****** East Wales Single Rink Competition ******
In the second round of this competition, Mark Krawiecki, Iain Russell, Barrie Thomas and Colin Howson travelled to sunny Barry Island, where they played a strong Barry Athletic rink that included ex-Pentyrch favourite Tim Morgan and ex-Wales international Richard Bowen. The Tyrchs made a good account of themselves losing 28-20 after 21 ends on a beautiful but very fast surface. Pentyrch fought hard all evening and were only 20-21 down at the 19th end, before dropping a 3 and 4 at the close. Good to see Tim again. Thanks to Margaret Krawiecka for supporting. Good luck to Barry Athletic for the rest of the competition.
****** Keeping the green alive ******
Tuesday 3rd July - as the spell of dry and hot weather continues, and has been forecast to last another two weeks it has become even more important to look after the green. At this time, it's easy to forget how much work Bill Malcolm, our greenkeeper does to provide a great playing surface. This season, he is being helped by Phil Snook and between them they are doing a great job. Most mornings, while most of us are still in bed, they are working at the club. This particular morning, just after 7 o'clock, Bill was watering the green - an early start helps reduce evaporation. Bill explained that at the moment, he and Phil need volunteers to water the green on certain days. Our thanks and appreciation, as ever go to Bill and Phil.

****** June Coffee Morning ******
Friday 29th June was another hot and sunny day, a good background for June's Coffee Morning. We raised £84 plus a further £34 on the tombola. The tombola has now finished and has raised a final profit of £94 for the club, all thanks to the work of Val Simpson. Thank you to everyone who came to support, (including the Ruffs' visitors from Berlin) enjoy the food and drink and each others' company. See you at the end of July.
****** Only Mad Dogs, an Englishman,Welshmen & a Pole go out in the midday sun... ******
On one of the hottest days of the year, so far, Brian Ilbery, John Berry Owen Morris, John Eagle, Jeff Tarr, Ian Broxton and Mark Krawiecki did some hard labour for the club. Most of the work involved shifting tonnes of soil and heavy rock to form an embankment to the great new path that leads to your door... (McCartney) The Welshmen and the Englishman did most of the spadework with John Berry on the tractor. MK contributed some shovelfuls in between having the most envious job on this hot day, of watering the green and keeping his feet nice and cool in the puddles. Thanks to everyone for helping today, in the recent past and, no doubt in the future. Together we can ALL succeed. 26/06/18
****** East Wales Single Rink Competition ******
Well done to Mark Krawiecki, Iain Russell, Barrie Thomas and Colin Howson for winning their first round match of the East Wales Private Green Single Rink Competition at St Fagans on Friday 22nd June. The next round will be away at Barry Athletic.
****** Another successful quiz night! ******
Well done to Brian Ilbery and the Social Committee for organising another successful quiz night that raised £651.22 which includes £200 made by the raffle organised by Jan and Kath. Thanks also, to Lynne and Howard for the scores, to the caterers, the rugby club and bar staff, the sponsors of raffle prizes and to the many competitors who had a very enjoyable evening. Congratulations to the winners who won an afternoon tea at Bethan Kate's Tearoom, Pentyrch. These events are CRUCIAL in keeping the club going and everyone's support is vital and really appreciated. (See the article below)
****** Work on New Path Begins ******
Tuesday 12th June and work began on the new path, leading to the club alongside the tennis courts began. For a long time the old path has been a bumpy ordeal for anyone pulling bowls bags behind them. A lot of the money raised through recent Coffee Mornings and social events, such as this Friday's Quiz Night, will help to pay for the new path. May your final approach to the club, now, be a smooth one!
The new path is now finished - Friday 15th June. Thanks to BI & JB for photos.

****** Great weather for "Spoons" ******
Monday 4th June and the warm sunny weather encouraged a good turn out for "Spoons". Good to see so many people enjoying their bowls on the green, including some recently joined and prospective players.

****** May Coffee Morning ******
May's Coffee Morning on Friday 25th was a bit of a damp squib as far as the weather was concerned but for the brave souls who turned up it was a very pleasant social gathering and profitable in raising vital club funds. Today there was a profit of £90 and £22 generated by the tombola. Thanks to everyone who came and supported and to the generous volunteers. After three coffee mornings, so far this year there is a cumulative profit of £277 and £60 through the tombola. Next coffee morning will be at the end of June with the Summer Quiz to look forward to before then.
****** Tribute to Alan Parsons ******
On Sunday 28th April at the Open Day, Ann Parsons, wife of the late Alan Parsons presented the club with a bench for our garden and a trophy in memory of Alan. The trophy will be presented to the Men's Club Singles Champion from 2018.
Alan was a member, Captain, Chairman and President at Pentyrch Bowls Club and was extremely well-respected and well-known in Welsh Bowls. He started his bowls career at Penylan Bowls Club but spent most of his bowls playing days at Pentyrch where he was very active in working for the club and will be fondly remembered for his charm and generosity by everyone who met him. He is probably best remembered for having organised Monday Evening "Spoons", a real labour of love, for many years: "Spoons" was crucial in creating a fun and social atmosphere for which the club is renowned; thanks to Alan's influence not only at "Spoons" but also in the wider bowls world around Wales and in the UK. Jan Berry and Ann led the tributes to Alan and were supported by close members of Alan's family. The bench with it's plaque will be a fitting tribute in the garden and the trophy will also be an added memorial to Alan's love of playing the game of bowls. The club is immensely grateful to Ann for her kindness in presenting the bench and trophy.

****** Painting of the Green ******
A beautiful watercolour paint of the green by a local artist has been donated to the club by the family of Norman Poulson, former member of the club. The painting was done by Glenys Mullins who was also a member of the club many years ago. The painting will soon be on display in the pavilion. It's fascinating to see what a rich history our club has, despite it's relative youth of only twenty six years.
****** April Coffee Morning ******
April is notorious for it's showers but today there was a deluge. The green was flooded by 11.30 am. Despite the bad weather a good turn out of 26 guests managed to enjoy themselves eating, drinking and socialising. In the process, they helped to raise £78 and £20 on the tombola. Huge thanks as well to the volunteers who ran the raffle, tombola and did the catering. The money raised goes directly into funding the club and keeping things going. See you again at the end of May when the weather will be better.
****** The Green is Open ******
On the evening of Monday 16th April, the green was open for play and there was an encouraging turn out for "Spoons", despite the cold and grey conditions. Thanks to everyone for their enthusiasm and willingness to get the season underway. Huge thanks also to Bill Malcolm, our Greenkeeper for getting the green ready earlier than a number of other local clubs. We look forward to a long, successful and happy season.
****** Wonderwall ******
While Donald Trump keeps on talking about building his wall between Mexico and the U.S.A. , the retaining wall at the "western" or tennis court at the end of the green has been demolished and rebuilt during the last few months. It has been completed and is ready for the start of the season. (hopefully on Monday 16th April). Huge thanks to the volunteers who have worked so hard to get the job done: John Berry, Brian Ilbery, Bernie Simpson, John Eagle, Brian Pearce and Alan Lowndes. Thanks also to Pentyrch Open Gardens who made a very generous donation of £500 towards the cost of the repairs.
****** Coffee Morning No.2 April ******
The second Coffee Morning of the year will take place at the club on Friday 27th April. We hope to have as good, if not an even better attendance than in March, which was a great start. Thank you! These events are a great chance for people to get together, enjoy each other's company and talk tactics for any forthcoming bowls matches! The events are also proving to be vital for the sustainability of the club, especially given our decreasing membership. Please do your best to come and support or, at least convince friends and relatives to come as well. April is a busy month with the Opening of the green, the Cheese and Wine on the 22nd and the Open Day on Sunday 29th. Hope to see you at all of them!
|
****** April Cheese and Wine ******
Our traditional Cheese and Wine event to celebrate the beginning of the outdoor season takes place at Pentyrch Rugby Club at 4.00pm on Sunday 22nd. April. Always a great social event and as stated in previous Latest News articles, a great opportunity to raise vital funds for the club. Please make every effort to attend. Thank you in advance to everyone who will be contributing to the buffet and raffle prizes. Contact Eileen Boddington for tickets which need to be bought in advance to help plan the catering. Hope to see you on the 22nd April.

****** First Coffee Morning of 2018 - a Success ******
We held our first Coffee Morning of 2018 on the morning of Friday 23rd March and it was a great success. Thanks to all the volunteers who prepared the tea, coffee and cakes and got the pavilion ready for the first social event of the year. Biggest thanks to all the guests, members and non-members who came to support and enjoy each others' company. We look forward to seeing you all again and, of course, we'd love to see you all on the green playing our great game. For the record, we raised around £120 thanks to the 40 people who attended. Thanks for a great start!
****** Social Events Dates for your Diary ******
The Social Committee work extremely hard to provide entertainment and social events for the club. These events are, of course, very important in providing great opportunities for members and non-members to socialise and have friendly meetings. The events are also vital in maintaining the sustainability of the club. We are now in a position where the money raised at these functions is literally keeping the club alive. Please, make every effort to support them and bring some friends and family along. All welcome.

****** First Coffee Morning of the Year! ******
A sure sign that Spring and the new season is getting close is that we have our first Coffee Morning of the year on Friday 23rd March, 10.30 am to 12.00 midday. These events proved hugely popular and successful in raising vital funds for the club as well as providing a great change for members and non-members to get together socially. Please come and support if you can and encourage friends and relatives to come along as well. See you there!

****** Emma and the Beast from the East do their worst! ******
This was the bowls club and green early on the morning of Friday 2nd March. The day before, St David's Day, the so-called "Beast from the East" from Siberia and Storm Emma from the Atlantic combined forces to hit South Wales with blizzards, freezing temperatures and drifting snow. This left a spectacular but bleak sight around Pentyrch and beyond. Hard to believe that the outdoor season begins in about 6 weeks - weather permitting.
****** Open Day 2018 ******
Our third Annual Open Day has been scheduled for Sunday 29th April. It is being organised by Mark Krawiecki, Ian Broxton, Brian Pearce and Sheila Paul. If you are able to help in any way, either on the day or with preparations, please contact one of them. We have increased membership through these days and they are an important way of getting new players, of whom we have great need. Thank you. |
****** Ladies' Fixtures 2018 now online ******
The Ladies' Fixtures for the forthcoming season are now online. Click on the Fixtures & Results 2018 link on the Navigation bar above or this link. Men's Fixtures, published previously, are also online. Thanks to Fixture Secretaries, Margaret Farmer and Colin Howson for organising.
****** Annual Tour begins to take shape ******
This year's tour is getting closer and all three venues for matches have now been confirmed. The tour is being organised by Mark and Margaret Krawiecka and will have a "seaside theme". We will be playing at Tenby Bowling Club, located a minute from Tenby's famous South Beach with spectacular views of Caldey Island, on Friday 8th June in the afternoon. On Saturday 9th of June we will be travelling the very short distance to the pretty seaside resort of Saundersfoot with its bars, cafes, ice-creams and seafood shops. Saundersfoot Bowling Club will be our hosts for the match on Saturday afternoon. On the way home to Pentyrch on Sunday the 10th, we will stop at Pendine with its spectacular beach, site of a famous land speed record set by Malcolm Campbell in 1924. Sunday afternoon's match will be against Pendine Bowls Club. We will be staying at the Fourcroft Hotel in Tenby and travel will be provided by Jervis Coaches of Port Talbot. Fingers crossed for gloriously sunny West Wales weather!
****** Penarth, a step too far. ******
On the evening of Wednesday 17th January 15 adventurous bowlers representing the club made the second winter season visit to Penarth Rectory Rd for the short mat challenge. Sadly, as ever, the very unfamiliar conditions provided by the short, narrow and fast rinks proved to be a step too far, although we were competitive at times. We all enjoyed the challenge and the friendly atmosphere on and off the green. Thank you to our hosts for the match and the hospitality.
Thanks to Captain Ian Broxton for organising the team, thanks to Eileen and Ann for representing the Ladies and guest player,Tim Morgan. Looking forward to playing on the grass soon!

****** Winter Quiz - Success! ******
The Winter Quiz, held on Thursday 18th January was a huge success for a number of reasons. Most importantly, over 100 people turned up, which, only 3 weeks or so after Christmas is fantastic. Everyone had a great time, taking part in the quiz, socialising and enjoying each others' company - one of the strengths of our club. The event raised the amazing total of £722, an exceptional amount that will go a considerable way to paying for a new path to give better access to the club from the rugby club on the path adjacent to the tennis courts.
Huge thanks to everyone who donated prizes for the quiz and raffle. The raffle run by Jan and Kath raised £242! First prize of £30 for the quiz was donated by Carpet Services (Cardiff) Limited. Thanks to Brian Ilbery, Eileen Boddington, Jan Berry, Margaret Davies and Peter Mynett of the Social Committee for putting in the hard work of organising and running the event - these things don't just happen.
First prize in the quiz was won by a team from Cardiff West Rotary who will kindly donate their winnings to one of their nominated charities. Tie-break for third place was contested by Debbie Morris's team who beat her son, Owen's team. Mums know best.
We would like to especially thank the great number of non-members from the local community who came and supported us. It is vital that all local clubs and business help and support each other. Of course, you would all be very welcome on the green playing bowls too!

The first social event of 2018 comes quickly on Thursday 18th January - a great opportunity to get together early into the new year. The Social Committee and others work hard to organise these events and the revenue generated is crucial in paying for our improving facilities and keeping costs down for everyone, so, please support.
