Rink scores: Iain Russell 17 - 17
Peter Stuart 15 - 13
Brian Ilbery 24 - 6
Ian Broxton 12 - 22

Saturday 12th June: Away defeat at St Joseph's in a PG1 fixture. All 4 rinks, skipped by Iain Russell, Brian Ilbery, Iain Broxton (Captain) and Peter Stuart went down.
Good to see some impressive improvements to our hosts' facilities even though we didn't get to use them because of Covid regulations.

Saturday 24th July: A home defeat in a PG1 fixture to visitors from Merthyr, Guest Memorial. Pentyrch 61 - 88 Guest Memorial. The only winning rink was skipped by Iain Russell backed up by John Davies, Colin Howson and Adrian Bevan. A cooler day and the rain held off after the previous seven days of heat wave.
Wednesday 28th July: A convincing away win in the CMWL at the Mackintosh Club on a breezy but sunny evening. All four Pentyrch rinks winning: winning skips for the record. Mark Krawiecki (first time as a skip this season), Iain Russell, Brian Ilbery and Peter Stuart. Overall score Mackintosh 45 - 75 Pentyrch. Always a nostalgic visit for MK who started his bowls "career" at the Mackintosh almost 30 years ago.
Saturday 31st July: A very narrow home defeat in a PG1 match against the Mackintosh Bowling club whom we met 3 days before. The defeat, Pentyrch 82 - 85 Mackintosh was even closer given the context of the game. Due to unavailability of several regular players, 8 of our new bowls players who have joined, only this season stepped in, and two players playing at 3rd for the first time contrived to get within 3 shots. A magnificent performance.
Ian Broxton's rink won 24 -11, Brian Ilbery's won 31-17, Peter Stuart's lost 15 - 18 and Keith Davies, 12 - 39. Captain Ian Broxton wishes to thank all the players individually and is so proud of everyone who wore the red Pentyrch shirt.

Wednesday 11th August: A damp, grey and gloomy evening in Pentyrch seemingly heralding an early start to autumn. Let's hope not. Rhiwbina were the visitors for this CMWL encounter and an excellent 3 rink win for the Tyrchs helped to dispell the darkness of the weather.
Pentyrch 69 - 50 Rhiwbina. 3 winning rinks skipped by John Davies, Ian Broxton and Peter Stuart. The defeated rink was skipped by Iain Russell. Next match is an away trip to Llantrisant on Saturday 14th August.

Saturday 14th August: Unfortunately, a heavy loss in a PG1 fixture away to Llantrisant who proved to be too strong. The sun came out for the afternoon after a morning of dismal greyness and rain.
Llantrisant 107 - 51 Pentyrch. One rink won, three lost.
Llantrisant 107 - 51 Pentyrch. One rink won, three lost.
Wednesday 18th August: A second crushing defeat in four days with a hundred shots against for a second time. All four Pentyrch rinks went down with the rink of John Davies, the only one to concede less than 20 shots. For the record the score was 100 Whitchurch - 34 Pentyrch.
The context, of course is that Whitchurch are one of the premier clubs in Wales with much stronger resources at their disposal and, currently Pentyrch are fielding a large proportion of players new to the game. Things will get better and it will have been valuable experience to have played in this match. Keep on trying, definitely don't give up or be put off and learn from what happened. Anyway, it didn't rain... every cloud...

Saturday 21st August: An away defeat in a PG1 fixture to Whitchurch Hospital. It was surprising that the game even went ahead after torrential overnight rain that continued for a good part of the morning. 3 rinks lost and one won. Whitchurch Hospital 96 - 60 Pentyrch.
Not conceding 100 shots can be considered a slight improvement on the last two results. Thanks, as ever, to Captain Ian Broxton for organising a team and to all who played.

Saturday 28th August: The last home PG1 fixture of the season at home to St Joseph's to whom we lost away in mid June. Unfortunately another defeat, 62-89 but progress again, in terms of shots conceded and a one winning rink against St Joe's this time. Great to finally have some decent weather and good to see Bryn Owen and Peter Mynett coming to support.
For the record, Mark Krawiecki with Bernie Simpson, Jim Martin and John Beacham (excellent leading, see pic with JB's red woods!) showed great resilience with a hard fought 16-14 win. Losing rinks skipped by Ian Broxton, Iain Russell and John Davies. Once again, great to see our new players involved in competitive matches; couldn't have done it without you and the experience will stand everyone in good stead for next year.
There are three remaining PG1 fixtures - all away - to Pontyclun on Wednesday 1st September, at Guest Memorial, Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday 4th September and at Cardiff Athletic on Saturday 11th September.

Wednesday 1st September: An early evening 5 pm start away at Pontyclun to beat the earlier sunsets as autumn approaches. A tough encounter was expected against a strong Pontyclun, who were top of the table and already celebrating promotion, in a PG1 fixture. A 78-50 defeat was the almost inevitable outcome with 3 rinks going down and Peter Stuart's rink, doing well to score 3 shots at the final end to draw 17-17. An away trip to Guest Memorial next Saturday.
Saturday 4th September: A beautiful warm and sunny afternoon greeted us at Guest Memorial, Dowlais for the penultimate PG1 fixture of the season. The last time I had visited this club was in my formative bowling years with the Mackintosh club when the club pavilion was a small wooden shed. After match drinks and hospitality was provided at the nearby, original memorial building. The shed has now been replaced with a magnificent clubhouse, changing rooms and bar with a raised terrace overlooking the seven rink green - facilities to be truly proud of and a great arena.
This was the setting for Pentyrch against a team seeking promotion with Pontyclun against whom we had lost three days before. This was a tough fixture and the pace of the green proved very difficult for many to control. The home team won 84-54 with three rinks victorious - losing rinks - Brian Ilbery, Barrie Thomas, Don Wibley, Adrian Bevan (7-29) , Mark Krawiecki, Jim Martin, Denzil Thomas, Gordon Tucker (17-23) and Ian Broxton, Colin Howson, Bryn Owen and Alan Lowndes (14-17) .Congratulations to Iain Russell's rink, with John Davies, Kieran Bosquette and local hero John Beacham who won 16-15 with 3 shots at the final end in a match that was close all the way through.
It is great to see veteran players, like Don Wibley (original founder member) and Denzil Thomas in their eighties and all our new to the game players like, Gordon Tucker, Adrian Bevan and Kieran Bosquette, on the green together. In that context, the Tyrchs should take some heart going into next year. MK

Saturday 11th September: Last PG1 league game of the season away at Cardiff Athletic in the shadow of the Principality and Cardiff Blues rugby stadia. A match and result to forget in a hurry.
A very heavy 127 - 46 defeat. Enough said. Time to recover and get ready for the new season in 2022!
