FINALS WEEKEND SATURDAY 8th AND SUNDAY 9th SEPTEMBER 2018
The weather forecast for Saturday's matches was not promising and there had been predictions of rain for the whole day. Fortunately, the forecast proved to be incorrect and the day's matches were played without interruption. This year's competition was organised by Margaret Krawiecka whose hard work during the previous weeks paid off and also meant the reintroduction of the Ladies' Pairs competition after a two year absence and Mixed Pairs competition after a one year's absence.
SATURDAY:
A small band of supporters braved the chilly conditions to support the finalists of the day. They kept themselves warm with tea, coffee and other refreshments provided by the ladies.
Owen Morris beat John Beacham in the Novices' Shield. Kath Morris and Sheila Paul won the Ladies' Pairs against Anne Lowndes and Jan Berry. The Men's Pairs Final was won by Peter Mynett and Mark Krawiecki against John Beacham and Colin Howson.
SUNDAY:
The weather was supposed to have improved today, but the opposite proved to be the case with heaviest downpour of the day saved until the last four ends of the Mixed Pairs Final which the contestants bravely finished. Play began with The Men's Triples and Ladies' Singles. The Ladies' match was closely fought and won by Margaret Krawiecka. The Men's Triples was won by John Beacham (at last a final win!), Mark Krawiecki and Brian Ilbery. Later in the day father and son, Iain and Nick Russell contested the Men's Singles Final for the New Alan Parsons Singles Championship in memory of Alan Parsons, kindly donated by Alan's family. Thank you to Anne, his wife who came to watch the match. Alan would have been very proud of the two players. Nick won the final. The Mixed Pairs Final was won by Colin Howson and Sheila Paul who played against Jan Berry and John Eagle.
Thanks to many people but especially to Competition Secretary and Umpire, Margaret Krawiecka for all the time and effort spent in organizing this year's competitions, to everyone who helped setting up and assisting and marking at various matches at the weekend and in matches leading up the finals. Thanks to everyone who helped with the catering and to everyone who came to support the players. Finally, thanks, as ever to Bill Malcolm for providing a great playing surface after a very challenging season of extreme weather.
