****** Christmas Coffee Morning success ******
Our last coffee morning of 2022 saw over 30 people braving the cold weather and, with raffle and a donation, we raised another useful sum for the club. For the 10 coffee mornings this year, a grand total of almost £1500 is a great achievement. Thanks to all those who came along and special thanks to our Father Christmas (Ken Lynham) and our Elf (Paul Cooper). Also thanks to Ian Broxton, Gordon Tucker and Jim Martin - our baristas for the morning - and to Bernie Simpson who collected the entrance monies. Finally, thanks to all the raffle prize and cake providers. There will now be a break from the coffee mornings, until the end of March, but we hope to see many members at the winter quiz on January 27th in the Rugby Club. B.I.

****** September Coffee Morning ******
Just a brief report of the coffee morning today. We had a great turnout (38), managed to get things done before the heavy rain set in and raised £170 for the bowling club.
Many thanks to all those who came along and to those who contributed in different ways e.g. by setting things up, by providing cakes and raffle prizes, and by running the raffle. Special thanks to Nicola Olson and Bernie Simpson for their hard work in making the coffee/teas and doing a lot of washing up! It was great to see six potential new members for next year at the coffee morning; it was also good to see old friends Bob and Wendy Burchill at the coffee morning. BI

With a home midweek fixture against Fairoak being postponed, Iain Russell suggested a practice session for team members and others. Iain led a very useful and informative session that encouraged players to consider tactics, choice of shots and ideas to make minor but important improvements to their game. It is hoped to run further similar sessions.

****** Summer Quiz ******
Pentyrch Bowling Club held its first quiz in over two years at the Rugby Club on 17th June. Exactly 100 tickets were sold and we made a final profit of just over £600. Thirteen teams competed for the three prizes, in what was often a noisy atmosphere, and just 2.5 points separated the first three places! Congratulations to ‘Dog Biscuits’ (Cardiff West Rotary) who won the first prize of £30 (donated by Move2Here estate agents); they will be giving their winnings to charity. Owen Morris’ team came second and won £15 (donated by Courtney Homes) and the Magnificent 7 won a tin of celebrations (donated by Eileen Boddington) for coming third.
Many thanks to a number of people for helping to make the evening run smoothly. First, thanks to the Social Committee for helping to organise the event and special thanks to Eileen, Liz and Pat for preparing the very nice supper; the help of other people in handing out the food on the evening was appreciated. Secondly, thanks to Pat, Liz and Margaret for getting raffle prizes and selling the raffle tickets. We gratefully acknowledge other local businesses in providing some of the raffle prizes, including Hopkins the butcher, Maison de Beauté and Pentyrch Pharmacy. Thirdly, thanks to Rose and Lynne for meeting people as they arrived; thanks also to Lynne for keeping the quiz scores. Finally, a big thank you to the bar staff and Rugby Club for looking after us so well.
We will be hoping to run a winter quiz in January. However, before that we will be holding our first Race Night in three years on Friday 22nd July, in the Rugby Club (7 pm). Tickets will be going on sale very soon and you can get them from members of the Social Committee. They are expected to sell fast, so please support us as we strive to raise much-needed funds in the wake of COVID-19.

Thanks to Iain Russell who took the opportunity to coach new players. Thanks again, to John Eagle for organising the rinks - not so easy with increased numbers, but a welcome challenge. ****** Green Opens ******
The Green successfully opened at 6:00pm on Monday 11th April with social bowls or "Spoons" organised by John Eagle. Despite being dry all day, the rain kindly kept off until we began but this did not put off a good number of members trying out the green for the first time this season. They were well supported by a number of non-combatants who watched cosily wrapped up on the benches on the verandah. Remember that the green is not only for use on social Mondays and match days. Members are strongly encouraged to use the green throughout the season to practise and arrange games amongst themselves. Have a great outdoor season. MK
