CHAMPIONS!
Saturday 6th September Pontyclun A 60 - 92 Pentyrch
And so, after only four defeats in the Private Greens during the season, the Tyrchs travelled the short distance to Pontyclun looking for a win to secure promotion as champions of Division 6. Pontyclun, already condemned to relegation were playing for pride. A notable turnaround for Pentyrch who have been relegated in the last three successive seasons. Second placed Sully could only watch from the sidelines, having finished their fixtures the previous week.
A confident Pentyrch won well in the end and were able to celebrate the championship on a beautful and sunny green with reserves and supporters Mike Britton, Ian Davies, Ken Lynham and Margaret Krawiecka - who has consistently supported the Men's team - home and away - this season and many others. In his post match speech, winning captain, Mark Krawiecki commiserated with the relegated Pontyclun players and thanked the Pentyrch players for their hard work, commitment and extended efforts over the season in achieving a truly successful and historic moment for the club.
Rink scores:
Mark Krawiecki, Tim Morgan, Barrie Lewis, Andy Butler 28-18
Darren Lewis, Andrew Herbert, Chris Locke, John Beacham 19-11
Iain Russell, Hywel Evans, Chris O'Leary, Martin Hopkins 30-7
Brian Ilbery, Peter O'Reilly, Denzil Thomas, Adrian Bevan 15-24

INTERVAL
Sunday 13th July Penarth Windsor 3 - 2 Pentyrch
In the few years that the East Wales Private Greens Top Club Competition has been running, this was the closest that we have come to progressing to round 2. It was a great effort by everyone involved on the day and thanks to the reserves on standby. The last day of the heatwave was uncomfortable and the difficult green made it even more of a challenge.
The Trychs won two out of the five events. Huge congratulations to Darren Lewis for winning the 4 wood singles after 27 energy sapping ends. Huge congratulations as well to the triples who also won their match: Tim Morgan, Andy Butler, Chris Locke.
Mark Krawiecki and Iain Russell lost in the pairs: they were level at the penultimate end losing by two at the last end.
The rink, Colin Howson, Peter O'Reilly, Paul Cooper and Chris Cooper started off shakily, came back well but had left themselves too much to do on a fiendish rink.
Adrian Bevan lost in the two wood singles, the hardest event, to a very tough and seasoned opponent.
A good experience for everyone in an exciting format.

Wednesday 9th July St Peter's 47 - 63 Pentyrch
After returning to winning ways in the Private Greens, The Tyrchs also showed some more resilience in getting a good, solid away win at St Peter's after the two recent defeats in the Midweek League. Almost a full house, with only one rink going down by a single shot. The prelude to another heatwave made it hot work, tempered slightly by the tall trees, lush and pretty surroundings at the Fairoak green.
Rink scores:
Darren Lewis, Chris Cooper, Ranjith Dodangoda, Andy Butler 18-11
Mark Krawiecki, Tim Morgan, Denzil Thomas, Margaret Krawiecka 17-9
Brian Ilbery, Adrian Bevan, Mike Britton, Ed Brookman 12-13
Iain Russell, Chris Locke, Roger Thompson, Chris O'Leary 16-14
Pentyrch were also very happy to welcome Tim Morgan back to the club and team after nine years and Margaret K for playing. Good to meet Justin Smart from St Peter's, whom Mark and Margaret have known for many years since all starting to play bowls at the Mackintosh club.
Thanks to Ranjith for the photos.

Saturday 5th July Pentyrch 88 - 82 Barry Athletic A
After two straight defeats in the private greens, the Tyrchs needed to get back to winning ways: they succeeded with a hard fought win over visitors Barry Athletic. A positive result that maintains our challenge for the top. Barry Athlectic must think that the weather in Pentyrch is always bleak and wet having experienced an almost identical day a year ago. Despite sustained rain overnight, before and during the match, the fixture went ahead - thanks to the green maintenance team for their great efforts for all of us, keeping the regular cutting and treatment going and dealing with the regular damage caused by a persistent fox (vulpes vulpes).
Before the match, Gavin Davidson made a short presentation of 'Hot Shot' (Bowls International Magazine) certificates to John Beacham, Denzil Thomas, Peter O'Reilly and Mark Krawiecki for scoring a maximum 8 against Pontyclun Athletic A earlier in the season.
Rink Scores:
Iain Russell, Hywel Evans, Denzil Thomas, Chris O'Leary 24-28
Mark Krawiecki, Darren Lewis, Gavin Davidson, Chris Locke 29-15
Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Ian Davies, Adrian Bevan 22-17
Colin Howson, Peter O'Reilly, Mike Britton, John Beacham 13-22
No PG fixture next Saturday but there is a Top Club match away at Penarth Windsor on Sunday 13th.

Wednesday 2nd July Pentyrch 57 - 61 Mackintosh
A very disappointing result at the hands of the visitors from the Mackintosh in the midweek league. Disappointing because the home side let what looked like a likely victory slip away. The Mackintosh team showed the qualities of resilience that was a prominent feature of Pentyrch's success earlier in the season. Since the beginning of June the home side have won just once (admittedly that included away matches at Penylan, Rhiwbina and Millwood). But losing can become a habit just as winning can. We need to get back to winning ways.
Rink scores:
Hywel Evans, Chris Locke, Paul Cooper, Andy Butler 11-16
Mark Krawiecki, Barrie Lewis, Denzil Thomas, Mike Britton 14-15
Gordon Tucker, Adrian Bevan, Tony Pontin, Ed Brookman 17-15
Colin Howson, Chris Cooper, Ranjith Dodangoda, Chris O'Leary 15-18
Thanks to Mackintosh captain Justin for his kind comments about our club, green and facilities.

Saturday 28th June Taffs Well 93 - 55 Pentyrch
Down at Taff’s Well!
After the false promise of Saturday sunshine in the skies above Taff’s Well, the hopes of a Pentyrch lead in the first leg of the Garth Cup faded in the unwelcome drizzle of late afternoon. Despite the loss, the encounter was enjoyable, both on the green and with our hosts’ post-match hospitality, including an abundant buffet, at Taff’s Well R.F.C.
So, many congratulations to Captain Ian Best for the home team victory. What was memorable was the fact that we had two mixed teams, perhaps for the first time in Garth Cup history. An immense debt of gratitude to Ajit, Eileen, Jan and Kaye for stepping up and coming to the rescue with short notice. Long may this continue!
The individual rink scores were as follows:
Darren Lewis, Denzil Thomas, Jan Ryan-Mapstone, Andy Butler 14 – 17
John Berry, Chris Locke, Ranjith Dodangoda, Ajit Singh 16 – 20
Colin Howson, Peter O’Reilly, Roger Thompson, Eileen Boddington, 11 – 40
Gordon Tucker, Kaye Locke, Tony Pontin, Ian Davies 14 – 16
We now have a mountain to climb – not the Garth! – to overturn the deficit for the second leg at Pentyrch. I’m sure we’ll go into that with optimism, a smile on our faces and a shine on our woods, something that is becoming the norm this year!
Gordon Tucker (Acting Captain)

Double Trouble - Eric Clapton
Wednesday 25th June Penylan 94 - 48 Pentyrch
What was always going to be a tough fixture away to Penylan, proved to be. The home side, riding high in their customary first place in the Midweek League, showed off their strength in depth with a convincing win, to do the 'double' over Pentyrch.
Rink scores:
Mark Krawiecki, Darren Lewis, Denzil Thomas, Chris O'Leary 12-17
Iain Russell, Chris Locke, Tony Pontin, Barrie Lewis 8-30

Nobody Said It Was Easy (Coldplay - The Scientist)
Saturday 21st June Millwood A 78 - 76 Pentyrch
The Tyrchs travelled to Millwood in Barry looking to hold on to top spot in the league and were optimistic of doing so having taken all 14 points from the day's opponents earlier in the season at home. However, playing away on a completely different green with a fast pace proved to be a great challenge and with an opposition strengthened from a few weeks ago, even more so. In the end, the Tyrchs suffered a very slender two shot defeat which was hard to take given everyone's efforts. It remains to be seen what other results do to the league position. It was interesting, that now we have played a few teams with women making up a full 16 as individuals on a rink, but this was the first time with three playing on one rink; to very good effect.
Rink scores:
Iain Russell, Hywel Evens, Mike Britton, Chris O'Leary 16-21
John Berry, Colin Howson, Ian Davies, John Beacham 24-13
Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Roger Thompson, Andy Butler 9-28
Mark Kawiecki, Darren Lewis, Denzil Thomas, Chris Locke 27-16
Thanks to Millwood for an excellent bowling green and for their hospitality which included a splendid buffet and pleasant company. Thanks to Roger Thompson for coming in as a late reserve and who had committed to come with the team before he was aware he would actually be playing.
Midweek business in a tough away match at Penylan comes next week, with little chance of any buffet.

Summer Breeze (Isley Brothers)
Wednesday 18th June Pentyrch 69 - 47 Rumney Gardens
The second half of the Midweek League took place on a gloriously warm sunny June evening with Pentyrch hosting Rumney Gardens. A very good winning result for a team with a number of players coming in from long absences and others stepping up to play in back positions. Thanks to Gordon as captain for the evening.
Rink scores:
Darren Lewis, Adrian Bevan, Denzil Thomas, Ed Brookman 13-8
Brian Ilbery, Chris Locke, Roger Thompson, Chris O'Leary 13-15
John Berry, Chris Cooper, Ranjith Dodangoda, Andy Butler 23-13
Gordon Tucker, Gavin Davidson, Mike Britton, Martin Hopkins 20-11
Thanks to Adrian for coming in as a late reserve: once again showing the value of having reserves. Back to private greens business this coming Saturday at Millwood and looking forward to maintaining first place with a good performance. It will be hot.

You Can't Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones)
Saturday 14th June Rhiwbina A 91 - 70 Pentyrch
This fixture had been delayed by a week due to heavy rain the previous Saturday. The Tyrchs travelled the short distance to second placed Rhiwbina hoping to consolidate their league topping position against their nearest challengers. In the end, they did, but not as convincingly as they had wished. A first defeat in the private greens meant that their lead was reduced to 5 points.
The match was played on a wonderful green and bowling surface considering how much rain had fallen in previous days. And the rain stayed away for the whole match.
John Berry's rink had a tough afternoon, particularly towards the end of the match conceding 13 shots to 3 in the last 6 ends. Final score: 11-30.
John Berry, Colin Howson, Mike Britton, Ranjith Dodangoda
Brian Ilbery's rink were 12-5 up at the 10th end, then collapsed conceding 20 shots then having the last word with 3 at the last two ends. Final score: 17-25.
Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Ian Davies, Adrian Bevan.
Mark Krawiecki's rink seemed to have been completely overwhelmed at 18-2 down at the 12th end and facing a massive defeat but then began an amazing fightback that gained momentum as the match came to a close, scoring 3 shots at the 20th end to go 15-18 and then 3 at the 21st end to draw 18-18.
Mark Krawiecki, Peter O'Reilly, Chris Locke, Gavin Davidson
Iain Russell's rink were the only winners. Their match also had some remarkable statistics with them conceding two 6's and still winning. Despite those two blows, they rallied strongly to win eight of the next nine ends. Final score: 24-18.
Iain Russell, Hywel Evans, Chris O'Leary, Martin Hopkins
Takeaway pizzas was the slightly unconventional but welcome after match food. Huge thanks to Ranjith Dodangoda for coming in as a very late reserve.

Oh Well (Fleetwood Mac)
Wednesday 4th June Taffs Well 76 - 41 Pentyrch
A visit to traditional rivals Taffs Well ended with comprehensive 14 point defeat in this Cardiff Midweek League fixture. This means moving down to fourth or fifth place depending on other results and probably a more realistic position. There are three opportunities to redress the balance in coming weeks with the return midweek league fixture at Pentyrch and the two Garth Cup matches. More importantly, we need a return to winning ways at Rhiwbina this Saturday.
Rink scores;
Iain Russell, Barrie Lewis, Mike Britton, Gavin Davidson 8-14
Colin Howson, Chris Cooper, Kieran Bosquette, Martin Hopkins 9-24
Mark Krawiecki, Darren Lewis, Denzil Thomas, Chris O'Leary 15-17

NEVER SAY DIE! (Black Sabbath)
Saturday 31st May Pentyrch 87 - 61 Penarth (Rectory Rd) A
Second placed Penarth came to Parc y Dwrlyn to have a go at taking first place from the Tyrchs, and despite the final overall score came close to taking two, possibly three home rinks. The final result, and so remaining top of the league is largely due to a determination to keep on going to the last bowl. Such resilience is an encouraging sign and will be needed to maintain our current position with a long way to go. Thanks to the visitors for the match and friendship on and off the green. Iain Russell's rink were very comfortable winners who, after going down 5-0 after three ends only lost three more ends in the whole match for three shots running out 28-8 winners. At one point in the match, the margin of their rink score was just covering the overall score of the other three home rinks. Brian Ilbery's rink were in control at 10-5 before letting the visitors come back to 10-10 at the 13th end but then regained control to finish 20-14 winners. Mark Krawiecki's rink struggled to go 1-9 down by the 10th end then began slowly chipping away at the visitors' lead, got to 10-10 then faltered again to 11-15 down with three ends to go. With two shots at each of the last three ends, pulled themselves over the line to win 17-15. Colin Howson's rink had the narrowest one shot victory and arguably the most exciting match. Penarth dominated the middle of the match to go 17-11 up at the 15th end. The Trychs then struck back with a spectacular 7 at the 18th end, to go 21-17 up and still did it the hard way conceding three shots at the last end to win 22-21. Phew!
Rink scores:
Iain Russell, Chris Locke, Mike Britton, Martin Hopkins 28-8
Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Tony Pontin, John Beacham 20-14
Mark Krawiecki, Darren Lewis, Denzil Thomas, Chris O'Leary 17-15
Colin Howson, Peter O'Reilly, Iain Davies, Adrian Bevan 22-21
Thanks to Anne Lowndes for standing by as reserve.
A tough week to follow with an away trip to local friends and enemies Taffs Well in the Midweek League and an away match at Rhiwbina on Saturday in the Private Greens. After yesterday's other results, Rhiwbina are now in second place when we visit.
Well done and enjoy being Number 1.

BACK TO REALITY?
Wednesday 28th May Pentyrch 44 - 68 Cardiff (Sophia Gardens)
Second placed Cardiff were the visitors to the home team in third place - top of the table clash. Cardiff proved too strong on two rinks, strong enough to win the match with a comfortable margin. Nevertheless, this is still a positive start to the Midweek League campaign with only two defeats from six. Time will tell how much of a reality check this was - next week we visit Taffs Well who have also had a strong start to their season. Thanks to Chris O'Leary for being a late replacement on John Berry's rink. Congratulations to the two winning rinks.
Rink scores:
Keith Davies, Hywel Evans, Kieran Bosquette, Gavin Davidson 19-11.

Thanks to the volunteers for helping to set up the rinks and clubhouse before the match and for staying behind after the match to clear things away, vac the carpet, wash up and take the rubbish to the big bins at the rugby club - leaving the pavilion clean and ready for it's next use. If you haven't been able to help with any of these necessary evils at a home match yet, please plan to do so the next home match - you will be loved even more for doing so. Skips, please ensure that all equipment from your rink has been put away tidily in the TARDIS. Teamwork is not just on the green. Thank you.

TYRCHS DIG DEEP
Saturday 24th May Pentyrch 83 - 59 Pontyclun Ath. A
A cold wind and a steady rain greeted the players of both teams and lasted for the first seven or eight ends, eventually giving way to dry and blustery conditions. The hard fought eleven points was a third straight private greens win - a fantastic achievement so far - and should take the Tyrchs to the top of the league. At one point in the match, three home rinks were significantly behind with only Mark Krawiecki's rink in a comfort zone. As a team, the Tyrchs showed good resilience with all rinks making good gains in the second half of the match to gain an overall win with a wide margin. Next Wednesday, we welcome Cardiff with a chance to move to second place in the midweek league. Heady times indeed.
Thanks to Ranjith for standing by as reserve and to Adrian Bevan for help in setting up the rinks and closing the club after the match.

BAD AT THE BRAD.
Saturday 17th May Llanbradach 138 - 46 Pentyrch
A very tough afternoon in a second round Carruther's Shield match at first division Llanbradach. This was very much a one-off match. The overall score says much about the gulf between the two teams, but that's not to say the Tyrchs didn't do themselves proud, especially in the context of how many of our players are relatively or very new to the game. The green had been cut to 4mm and 'ironed'' in the morning to make a fast and challenging pace - difficult to adjust to from the pace of our green. Well done to John Berry's rink for containing their opponents and to Tony Pontin for making his debut on a difficult day.
Our hosts were very gracious in their win and provided us with excellent post-match hospitality. Good luck to them in the next round and well done to Gelligaer for their win over Penylan. Back to Midweek League reality next Wednesday at Roath Park.
Rink scores:
Mark Krawiecki, Hywel Evans, Denzil Thomas, John Beacham 11-33
Iain Russell, Chris Locke, Tony Pontin, Martin Hopkins 6-36

Wednesday 14th May 2025 Pentyrch 61 - 60 St.Peter's
A win by the most slender of margins earned the Tyrchs a win over visitors St Peter's who played with two players short. The victory meant that Pentyrch now have four wins out of five - a very encouraging start to the season. Two great woods from Chris O'Leary at the last end of the match, drew two amazing shots either side of the jack to see Pentyrch home. Well done to everyone, including the two reserves who covered absences, proving that even reserves play a crucial role in our overall success. This Saturday, in the Carruther's Shield at Llanbradach there will be a different challenge - let's give them something to think about. The weather is set fair to play at a club with true bowling tradition and prestige on a wonderful playing surface. Enjoy.

Wednesday 23rd April Rumney Gardens 53 - 70 Pentyrch
Tyrchs Bloom at The Gardens in Solid Away Win
An encouraging and solid team performance for the opening league match of the 2025 and a win. An away fixture in the Cardiff Midweek League at Rumney Gardens.
The green proved challenging, especially for the first five or six ends when bowls picked up what seemed like half the soil from the green as they trundled their way from one end to the other. Three winning rinks and one rink that only fell short at the final end. A cup of tea and biscuits was an understated way of celebrating one played, one won. Thanks to everyone at Rumney for hosting and hospitality.
Rink scores:
Mark Krawiecki, Chris Cooper, Roger Thompson, Gavin Davidson 14-10.
Brian Ilbery, Gordon Tucker, Mike Britton, Chris O'Leary 19-16.
Keith Davies, Adrian Bevan, Paul Cooper, Chris Locke 13-15
Iain Russell, Colin howson, Andy Butler, Martin Hopkins 24-12
Thank you to Ranjith Dodangoda for support and travelling as reserve. The next fixture is at home to Penylan in the midweek league which will prove to be more of a challenge.
