Could be called
the Top Club in South Glamorgan, being almost one thousand feet
above sea level !
Started about1983 by a bunch of "ageing" rugby players
looking for a summer recreation.
Recruitment of some bowlers like David George, Iain Russell and
other interested parties living in the village resulted in the carving
out of the green from the rock of the Garth mountain, by 1991 the club
was ready for competition. Then in 1992 , inviting Dr. Kim Howells
MP to give his blessing, the the green was opened, I have heard some
uncomplimentary reports on the green at that stage! Under the
direction of D Russell Howell, work on the green has continued every
close season, and it is largely down to him and some enthusiastic
volunteers, that the playing surface has attained the very high
standard reached todayPortakabins served as changing rooms
etc, and the Club was ready to take on the world! Pentyrch
joined the Welsh Private Greens (Eastern Section) and the Taff Ely
Mid -week League.
However, it is much more than a bowling facility, internal activities
include
Cheese 'n' Wine Lunches, Barbeques, Quizzes, Horse Racing and Murder
Mystery Nights.
The Club is also strongly linked with all village activities, Open
Gardens in
addition to the Rugby,
Cricket and Tennis Clubs.
The local school sends it's top year for coaching.
Monday Evenings, 'Spoons' run by Alan Parsons reflects the enthusiasm
within the club, with over 36 regularly taking part, also with casual
drop ins, we have had 52 participants on one occasion. Even on inclement
evenings a number of diehards present themselves and it is a rare
event when "spoons" is cancelled.
An annual feature is a tour, normally first week in June which is
well patronised and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Two gentlemen's teams playing on Saturdays and one on Wednesdays
in addition to a ladies
team playing on Tuesdays and Thursdays, stretch our resources. We need some fresh
recruits URGENTLY, be they experienced, novice or junior. A warm welcome
is extended.
So this is an appeal to all, please join this forward thinking club
and enjoy a sport, which is both healthy and enjoyable.
Junior Sessions with qualified coaches Fridays about 4.20 pm.
